How can we get more of the Denver people to show up at meets?

Postby Huzer » Thu Nov 03, 2011 9:14

Simple question. Discuss.

(By Denver, I mean general metro area...HR, DTC, Westminster, Thornton, etc, etc)

Speaking as an outside: Better planning, better reminders, and not on weekdays.

For something that tends to happen once a month, the Denver meets on the first Thursdays never seem really well planned. It's not really ever clearly specified in an easily accessible location where the next meet will be (eg I don't remember the name of the place that it's at tonight but I know it's by the Pepsi Center, and it's on some random page of the thread) and it takes forever to decide. There is always chatter about it, but it's never clearly stated where meet will be for anyone to see.

Weekdays - I can see how a Thursday might be better for some people than say a Saturday depending on work schedules and what not, but I would see Friday or Saturday being a better day for most people.

Reminders - It's easy to post in a thread and say you will go and then completely space the event unless you get a reminder like a PM of some sort. A "bump" isn't the greatest way to remind people. PMs would be better IMO.

Predating the meet thread, and including the meet thread, the meets had always been at Buffalo Wild Wings in Park Meadows. For well over a year. The reason the location changed is...because only 2 or 3 people would show up at those well defined meets/location/time.

The lack or participation has nothing to do with how well organized a thread is. It has to do with people not wanting or willing to show up. It's pretty simple...the real question is:

What will it take to get some damn participation/interest? (Don't simply mention "Do it on the weekends!" That hasn't worked either.)

One of the things that bothered me going to my first meet was "how would I recognize anyone?" . I think it would be good to have either a reserved area or something as simple as a table flag or a reservation. I tried to address this for tonights meet.

Being positive about the meets is important too. a lot of the talk centers around negatives, which doesn't encourage participation.

Punch & Pie?

I'll be the first to admit that I prefer the shindigs to be down in the DTC area, purely out of geographical convenience. Granted I'm not opposed to making it up to Denver now and then, but the handful of BW3 meets that I went to reasonably well attended. Even with lots of notice and good amount of PR, stuff like this is hard to pull-off. I at least applaud the continued effort!

If you want good beer and lots of parking, I recommend that you start going to "The Breck" as I fondly call it. It's right on the NE corner of Blake and 21st. The CSC (Colorado Sportbike Club) used to go there for years every Wed, and The Breck was always a great host. I may still even know the bartenders there.

Not a lot of passion in the car scene lately. Offer free beer.

well here are my reasons why I don't show up.

my sister has some religious thing from 6 to 9, so I can't really don't anything between that time cause i'm her ride home and don't want to run late or something.

thursdays are fun, if it was weekend that would be something to do on a weekly thing. that way if you miss one week you can always make the next one. once a month means if you miss one then it is an entire month to make the next one. and then i say to my self, some of them have been showing up for months and years. i will be that new guy that no one knows.

the age thing. I can't drink so i will feel like the "square" also i'm pretty sure i'll be left out of many conversations.

I would show up if it was at a "fun" center. like bowling. pool, sporting event, movies. then talking wouldn't be the only form of entertainment.

Saturday and Sunday would be a good option.

^ I'm with Alex.

Weekdays aren't the greatest. Friday/Saturday/maybe Sunday would be much better.

Once monthly (only consistent meet for Denver area) is not often enough. If not every week, maybe every other week.

And also with the whole "new guy" thing. I feel the same. I know I have been here about 10 months, but there are plenty of people I've never met that seem to be the ones to show up. Huzer, tut, AIM WO4, dommo_g, etc. I've never met any of you. I feel weird if I'm going to meet up with a bunch of people to go to dinner on a Thursday night, especially where one of the "excuses" for people to go is to drink, which I can't do.

Something a bit more fun besides just dinner/drinking would appeal more to me personally. Not that there is something wrong with going to dinner somewhere, but I don't know how much of a "draw" there really is to a meet that is centered around eating dinner.

Some pretty good suggestions in there. I'm of the belief that if the people st meets have a good enough time while there, they will happen more frequently on their own. An actual activity seems like a good idea (although I need food).

And just to throw tut under the bus, there really isn't much drinking going on...at least when I have been to meets (3x now in about 4 months of membership).

I remember over the summer when I did go to a couple meets, a few of us ate over at Old Chicago on Colorado Blvd (IIRC it was Christi, Henry, Pat, and I), everyone was drinking except me :p I've got nothing against having a drink or two if you're old enough, but I think perhaps a meet centered around something besides food and booze would be fun. Whether it's seeing a movie, going somewhere like Dave & Busters, or just kinda meeting up and seeing where it goes (Starbucks meets that happened over the summer come to mind), I think perhaps there are some ideas that could attract more people.

I would say let's do another cruise, but I think it's to the point where most 7 owners, 8 owners, and Miata owners aren't really up for that. I know there is like erod who uses a Miata as a snow car, but he's the exception, not the rule. Plus, mountains tend to be the general cruise locations, and the roads get worse up there. I don't think many people would be up for a cruise at this point. We did get a good 20 or so people at one of the cruises over the summer though.

I wanted to make this meet, but was at work until 7 and then had to head home to put on the snows and do school work. For me I can and would drive to DTC, DTown, Westy, etc but I would prefer weekends or Friday evenings. Oh, and free non pain in the ### parking where we can get all our rides together or close to being together.

If we can get enough of a solid committment Id imagine we could negotiate some discounted or comped food and discounted beer. ive done it before for other get togethers business related.

i was actually planning on attending but, SEMA was this week, and well... easy decision.
i think it would be great if it was every other week, but i can see the financial downside. To echo what other have said: the location needs to be decided weeks (once a month) or a week (every other) before and easy to determine without having to read every post between meets as it's mostly usless banter.

so, let's pick a new place if we decide on a single location and create a new thread that has the correct and current info
