"Slip" In Second Gear?

Postby Stealth01 » Mon Nov 30, 2009 9:14

So I've started to notice a "slip" in my car when under load. Usually happens when I'm accelerating hard to merge or pass someone, but I'll get through first gear all right, shift to second, and then I'll feel a very slight "slip" in the rear wheels. A rear-right, I think.

Feels like the right rear tire is breaking loose, then grabbing again, but that doesn't seem real likely if it isn't doing so in first gear.

Someone suggested perhaps a differential tooth missing or something like that. Any ideas?

35K miles. But this happens AFTER I have released the clutch all the way.

Yeah, someone else on another forum suggested synchronizer, but again, this is after I've already released the clutch all the way....

Odd. Are you sure it's a "slipping" feeling you're experiencing and not something else?

I'm going to play around tonight and see what happens, see if I can get a better feel for it. It feels like the back tire slips and then catches again, but not that "hard." More like something repositioning. A little worried it's the diff mount.

Possibly the rear diff gear oil since it is a limited slip... Has it ever been changed? I changed mine at around 32k and it was nasty. The driveline felt much smoother (esp hard launches) after the change to redline. It's an easy job to do...

Well, I tried and tried to replicate it tonight, but it didn't want to satisfy me. Try again tomorrow.

I'm going to drain and re-fill all the fluids at the PAFB auto skills center soon, anyway. So that should take care of the diff fluids.

take a look at the rear end fluid when you drain it and see if it has any metal in it (hopefully not).

Possible Issue

Postby quake2015 » Tue Dec 01, 2009 9:14

I have a speed 6 as well and had an issue similar to this. Sometimes when I would go around corners, usually in second gear actually. My issue was more of a thumping/clunking noise though. The issue was for me was the rear diff was failing (mazda knows of the issue, so its not unusual) and drying out, which was causing strain on the rear U joint, which also was failing. They had to replace the rear diff and the entire driveshaft on mine. It was all warranty for me at the time. But mine was closer to 29K miles.

I get the same thing, but its the "3K rpm shutter" thats common in ms6's (talked w/ eric) I guess its normal, something to do w/ the motor. My guess is that lean spot right around that rpm range. But next time it happens take a look at ur rpm's and see where they're at.

I managed to replicate it today, but in THIRD gear. So I should definitely have the rear diff looked at, then?
