If anyone wants some data, I just drove my 2002 Protege5 five-speed to and from Las Vegas. The car is stock except 195/55R16 tires, slightly taller than the 195/50R16 stock size.
Around town, driving mildly, I get 28-31 mpg. Drove from Boulder to Las Vegas on Monday, 10/20. Good weather, no issues. Cruise control set at speed limit, 75mph, as verified by a GPS. Left Boulder 5am arrived LV 4pm. Running synthetic oil w/2K on it. Stock body, with roof crossbars.
Returned Thursday afternoon from LV to Green River, UT, then Friday to home. Same conditions. Car ran great. Didn't use air conditioning.
Here is fuel mileage by segments as round-trips, so any uphill/downhill is neutralized.
Boulder - GJT R/T 33.4
GJT-Richfield, UT R/T 28
Richfield - North LV 29.4
City driving 26.2
Overall mileage was 30.13, lower than expected. I get 29-30.5 around town!
Based on in-town mileage, I expected about 35 mpg on this long a trip.
