Eh.... I can easily tell the difference between just a 996 and 997. Similar....... Maybe, the same, nah....

The additional vid and pics are at least, more appealing than the photo on the first page. The rims certainly weren't helping...

I'll allow it.

The official reveal is better with the additional pictures. I like it. The turbo 4 is interesting.... Although its a little weird to have 4-6-8 options.

I thought they did away with the 4 years ago. Even the 6 was discouraging. But all 3? I'm back to being skeptical..

I like the idea of having a 300hp turbo 4 with rwd... I really do. But for the Mustang, I can't help but feel like they should have left 2 engine choices. I'm really curios to see how it fares though. My initial thought is that either the 4 or the 6 will just not sell well. Both are similar power wise, so it's almost whether or not the marginal MPG is the difference, or the engine noise it produces when you don't select the 8. Weight is supposed to be decreased as well, so the 4 may make for a very balanced vehicle.

Good points. I guess the Mustang isn't a 'muscle car' anymore. They're already dabbling with turbos in many of their other models. They need to stick with the 8. If I want a turbo 4, I'll get a focus st. If I want a peppy v6, I'll get a Taurus..

You're right- providing too many options is only going to hurt them, saleswise

The boosted 4 might also be a better choice than the 6 at altitude. I still would never buy either, but the lower power lower priced options are what keep Mustang production going.

yeah, good point, less HP loss. I'd be in the same mindset that if I bought a mustang... it's gonna have a V8. I'd be all for them releasing a BRZ/FRS competitor that's not a mustang with that 4 in it!

+1

While I like the idea of a Mustang having a V8, offering a turbo 4 (again) is a real sign of the times. It's been a while since they offered a turbo 4 ('84-86' SVO?), but due to ever stringent emissions and fuel economy mandates, I'm not terribly surprised.

A lot of other companies have killed off their larger motors here lately, or at least offered smaller entry motors due to regulations and to some degree, lack of interest from the masses(<---blasphemy!!). The BMW 3-series no longer comes standard with an I6, unlike the E46 & E90 cars before it... Audi no longer offers a V6 (VR6?) in the A3 & A4... Mercedes now offers a FWD 4-cylinder *cough*CLA*cough* (<---what is the world coming to?!?)... Even high-end performance oriented cars that scoff at fuel economy have gotten (or are getting) smaller motors recently: BMW M5 (from V10 to V8), BMW M3 (from V8 back to I6), Audi S4 (from V8 to supercharged V6), Mercedes C63 AMG (from 6.2L to 4.0L).

I must admit I've taken part in this phenomenon as well; the old VW R32 came with a 3.2L VR6, which was replaced by my Golf R's turbo 2.0L I4. While the new motor/car is lighter, faster and more fuel efficient, I must admit I was always a big fan of the throttle response and sound of the old VR6!

Apparently the "we offer a smaller, more fuel efficient motor" trend is biting everyone; American pony cars included. All I can say is: at least Ford is still offering a big, hairy chested V8 to those out there who still care. :D

Just my $.02
