Its like a cheap stroker kit. I have also been told they flow better than the 2.5 heads but can't back that claim up. Orrigionaly i was going to rebuild the 2.0 I have and put a 2.2 stoker kit in it. With the cost of the stoker kit and machine work I would have been looking at roughly $3500. This way I can buy a 2.5 STI short block straight from Subaru for $1800 fully assembled and prety much bolt everything on to it. There is an adapter kit to make everything work. This setup is called a 2.5 Hybrid.

Historically the issue was that the combustion chamber on the 2.0 heads was a bit smaller and left a bit of metal that would hang over the cylinder and would also bump up the compression (as we know, bad in a forced induction application). The metal that would hang over would get hot and cause detionation. There was a tuning company that have mapped the combustion chamber of the 2.5 heads and created a CNC program to machine the combustion chamber of the 2.0 head to match the 2.5. Problem solved. The process is only $400 for both head and then they can also rebuild the heads while they have them. I plan on have them deck the heads and do a 5 angle valve job.

My donor didn't come with transmission but found one on CL for $150 that needed to be rebuilt. This was the plan anyways since I will be swaping in a stronger gear set (the Subaru gears are known to be week). The nice thing about Subaru's is that they are like Lego's, all the parts an pieces work with other models. What people are doing is swaping in the gear set from the Legacy GT which is 2-3 time stronger than what came in the 02-07 WRX's.

The donor car is completely disassembled. I had a few days off and decited to take advange of them and get'er done. I am always amazed at how much you there is to take apart when you tear down a car. I think I took out every nut and bolt in that car. Now that the parts are removed it is on to getting them cleaned up and painted to go into the 818. After that, it is on to the engine and trans build. Here are some pics.

Got some good news this week. I was able to move my kit completion date moved up to April 19th. It will probably take a week or two to get it here to Denver so I probably wont see it till the first week of May. Have been busy planning and am working on getting everything ready by the time the car gets here.

It sounded like there were quite a few people that ordered their kit and were not ready for them come the completion date, so FFR put together a hot list of customer who were ready. I got my date moved from Dec 14 to May 14.

Let me see if the wheels are available. That frame is an early 70's F250 4 door Ranger addition that they did a Cummins swap into. They found a 2002 F 250 that caught on fire and transferred everything to the new frame. The new frame was lifted, 4x4 and upgraded axels. I will take a pic if I get a chance, it is a sweet truck. I love it when old meets new.

If you look in the background of one of the pics you will see the twin turbo LS3 in the 63 Olds.

no need to worry about the wheels, I'm probably going to sell the truck anyway.

How's the motor build coming along?
Will you have everything ready to go?
What's the color scheme you're going with?

ImageIf your haven't noticed, I like to post pictures.

SO Chris,,,,,,,I am glad you asked.

The motor is fully planed and funded just want to wait all little bit till I get it build. Like I previously stated I am build a 2.5L Hybrid and having a fully built 2.5 long block built for me. It will have a brand new case, STI crank, race bearings, forged rods and pistons. I will also be bumping up the compression slightly from 8.2 to 8.5. The 2.0 heads are going to be rebuilt, valve job and the combustion chamber will be machined to the 2.5 head specs. I did some research and have decided to build the motor to have the power more in the middle than at the top end. I am also going with a slightly smaller turbo than originally planed and the higher compression will help. For the turbo I was going to go with a18G but decided on a Blouch 16G-XT. The car is also being built to run on E85 so upgraded pump and 1000cc injectors are in order. I bought a lightweight fly wheel on CL and will run an Exedy Stage 1 HD clutch.

The transmission with be rebuilt with a Legacy GT gear set but am going to pass on the LSD for now. Just not in the budget but may be later. For brakes I am going to go with Wilwood's on all four corners and decided to go with the red calipers. Rims I am looking at 18" Enkei PF01 and will do wider in the back.

That's the plan, here are some pics.

The kit comes with a white gel coated body and was done so painting the car is not required. In the beginning the car is going to stay white but eventually I want to have the car painted. I am leaning to painting the car red. I feel that red really suites the car well. For the seats I will go with the new Corbeau Sportline Evolution. I order the frame to be powder coated, got the CF front splitter, CF rocker extensions, & CF rear defuser.

I really like the dark red with black accents. In the end it would probably be easier and cheaper to paint the car first.

The time is drawing near. Only one week until my kit completion date and than another 1-2 weeks till it arrives in Denver. Parts off the donor WRX have been cleaned, painted and ready to go on the car. The new parts are starting to pile up and am getting close to having everything I need to get the car built.

Two weeks ago I tore the old engine down so I could get the heads pulled and shipped out for machining. I dropped the transmission off today to be gone through and to have a Legacy GT gear set and Cusco 1.5 LSD installed. The brake kit, Mishimoto radiator/fan assembly, Clutch, 1000cc injectors, 255lph fuel pump, brand new 2.5L STI short block from Subaru, master gasket set, equal length ceramic coated header/up pipe and turbo are all in. The heads should be back in about a week and then to engine will be ready to come together.

The new 2.5L short block is so small in its little box.

Does this turbo make my hand look small?

Very cool project. A guy I work with just ordered a kit, I might see if he needs a hand building the thing. You wouldn't know of anywhere to get a good donor cars or useful parts?

There are a few companies that are selling all the parts you need from the donor all nice and clean on a pallet, shipped to your door. I did come across a guy who sells nothing but Subaru pats and will buy & trade parts. I have the card somewhere but will need to find it.

Cool, please let me know if you find it or recall the name of one of the companies who pallet up all the parts. Good luck on the build!
