May be a bit more crude, but Home Depot (and others) sell bright colored duct tape. Laminate the sheets before cutting them out!?! Regular sissors work fine on the vent covers. May be a bit more difficult with the tape on them as well.

Have any of you attempted to paint these? They say they are paintable. Figured I would paint them red.

They paint fine. Ecams suggestion of duct taping them is a good one too.

Shadow and I left around 2:45 after corner work.
Had a fantastic time in Eric's Miata. It's was awesome driving a vehicle that did what it was asked and still remained that composed and easy to drive. Massive thanks again to Eric.

Shadow, remember, that hand-over-hand habbit that losing gained you 2+ seconds? Don't let that rear its' ugly face on the streets anymore either :) Practice looking ahead and the correct hand motiins on the street and eventually they become second nature ;)

Real eye opener yesterday for sure. Makes me anxious for the next one. I have a lot to learn about my car and its capabilities let alone how to drive. Perms are great, drivers education is good, but a coupke of scca days would be excellent for drivers before they get their licenses.

Great time again!

Thanks to geo and pat for riding aking with me and to pat/eric fire the ride right before my final run.

Glad you all enjoyed the event. I was working first heat, so I didn't get much of a chance to say hi.

I didn't even see your scirocco there.

I'm planning to be at some of the events during the summer series.

Is it legitimate to drive in different cars during the day?

Is there a method to which cars appear in which heat?

For instance, my mz3 was in heat 1, but there was an ms3 in heat 2. would it be possible to plan to have the ms3 driver co drive my mz3 and vice versa? Figure it just makes for more track time. If so, then I guess we would both need to hope there is a heat 3 and we can volunteer then.

Oh, and Al rode with me on my first run. What an interesting guy. Super cool.

Sorry I missed you. We ran third heat- car was in the trailer until mid-second heat

Some car swapping happens during winter series, but you shouldn't do it for competition runs during summer series. An interesting exception is X class- as they only count their first three runs (like the Nationals format), car swapping can happen during uncounted 4th or 5th runs- and it's also a good time to ask for rides.

Yes. Cars are grouped by class, then classes are assigned to heats based on a number of factors- making even heat sizes, specialty worker assignments, rotating heats to avoid a class always running in a certain heat, special requests, etc.

Everyone gets the same number of competition runs, no "dual-two drivers". At some events, we have un-counted fun runs after competition runs for those that want to stay. $2/run, and you have to to help until tear-down is finished.

Al's a great guy. Every so often, he will announce runs in a super-rapid-fire soccer announcer style.. in Italian! Totally hilarious. :D

good questions,
if i autox, i'd hope to be in the same heat/class as the few people i know that'd be there, especially since it'd be my first time... my MS3 is pretty much stock though might have an SRI by then..

I was looking for it since I knew what it looked like. Great car. I'll catch up with you at the next one hopefully.

You'll be surrounded by "friends you've not yet met"- a bunch of other car nuts, that will bend over backwards to help out a newcomer. All you have to do is say hi, compliment someone on their car, ask a question (especially "what's that part for?") and you'll be on your way to a whole new circle of friends.

I talked to the gentleman in the speed3 while we were there early, but he was in the midst of prepping his car. It seemed to me, that until the cars are in grid, the drivers are focused on getting everything ready.

Since this was my first time, it was just a personal insight I had. Is this fairly true? In the future, I plan to wait until the cars are in grid or pre-grid to talk to the drivers about their cars specifically, unless they are prepping right beside me and just talk to the folks in line for registration.

That was a smooth operation too by the way. Trailer is classy. Congrats on it.

Interesting point. I suppose you can develop a sense of when you are interrupting based on what they're doing. Many drivers have a time period before a run where they're strapped in and thinking about the course. If they have their eyes closed, are staring off into the distance, talking to themselves, or seem otherwise distracted, it's probably a bad time to say hi. Offering to lend a hand is a good strategy to avoid being an "interruption" ;)
