WRX Budget Build nearly hits 12's!

Postby dsm_luck » Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:14

Couple weeks back I took the 2012 WRX to Bandimere to get a new time on the td05 20g. 13.0@109mph. I like the trap speed but the ET should have been deep into the 12's. In the video you can see that I am having trouble launching the car without glazing the clutch in first. Possibly launch control will help this?

Anyway here is the mod list:

Kinugawa td05 20g @ 22psi
FIC 900cc injectors
Walbro 255
Torqued Performance Open ECU street tune.
E-bay Catless Downpipe
E85

The hard parts and the tune cost around $1600 total. Not bad for the small amount of mods.Right now though I am doing front and rear sway bars and brake pads for the open track day at HPR on Friday? Anyone want to go?

The WRX's don't have any kind of delay valve in the clutch hydraulics? BMW started doing that years ago to make their cars more drivable, at the cost of the clutch.

nice run. Would have been 12's with a quicker shift... sounded very slow.

What was your 60' on that run? I trapped 109.6 but only ran 13.3 because of my 2.18 60'. I'd imagine yours was under 2 sec being AWD.

Not that I know of. The WRX is pretty basic honestly.

Yea after the clutch slipped after the launch i took it easy on the shifts. Really could use flat foot shifting. I should hit mid to high 12s with LC and FFS.

1.9 60ft. Best so far is a 1.8 60ft on the stock vf52 turbo. On the bigger 20g i am having a hell of a time launching. Its either bog or glaze clutch. Clutch holds perfect after 1st gear though just launching fail on my part.

Looks like our cars would be a good match from a roll though past 100mph the gearing would start to hamper me.

I ran a 13.3 on the stock vf52 @102mph. Makes a good comparions for RWD vs AWD on street tires. I bet if you threw slicks on you would be deep into the 12s.

Yea I'm sure with slicks I could hit a 12 up here. I just don't care enough about the dragstrip to drop that kind of money on something I'll only use a couple times a year. I did run a 12.6 @ 114 in Tulsa last summer on the same street tires. Won't be hitting that trap up here though without quite a few more mods.

Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot more I can do N/A that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I can add a bigger throttle body but then I have to go to headers ($1000+) or cams ($1400+), neither of which are easy to remove if I have to have something covered under warranty and neither of which is even counting labor. At that point I might as well save up a few thousand more and get a supercharger.

Even still that's a good time and trap for your mods. It seems like most of the 5.0's I have seen are running low 14's to high 13's with a few dropping into the mid to low 13's. I ran one at Bandimere when I was on the stocker and he had temp tags and he ran a low 14 to my low 13.

FI would be a huge jump. N/A cars are at a serious disadvantage compared to FI at this altitude. You could make some serious power.

My build is kinda odd. I have left a lot of power on the table by not going with aftermarket intake/headers/EWG/Intercooler. The build is about as basic as you can do for E85 and upgraded turbo but I am trying really hard to keep the build mild because its my DD. The safety net for a DD on these 2.5 WRX's is around 350-375whp or a 115-118 mph trap speed. I figure if I keep under that everything should be relatively safe.

You are going on Friday correct. Would like to check out your car.
