Just found Angry Birds.... I have to charge my phone every few hours now, thanks!

What is the purpose to "root" the phone? What does it do?

Gives you access to certain hardware functions you can't normally use, like the wi-fi hotspot feature. You can use it without rooting, but you have to pay Sprint $30/mo. (This comment was HTC Evo specific).

It also allows you to do things like run other versions of the android operating system, delete any preinstalled crapware and open up a fair amount of functionality you wouldn't have otherwise. For example, today I installed a piece of software that will allow me to set up certain circumstances to overclock and underclock my phone. My Fascinate is plenty fast, so I set it to underclock the phone's cpu from 1ghz to 400 mhz when the screen is turned off to save battery life.

sweet. I think I would be way over my head playing with that stuff. I unforutunatly got out of the "geek world" (Computers) about 7 years ago and just lost way to much knowledge to jump back into it. I used to love tinkering with clock speeds and such. Maybe I will try it on the roomates phone so I wont break mine :D
