I've worked at the same place since 2006 while in college, still with them. Only 5-10 minute drive.

Yeah bro, you can't be a picky person these days. Just accept the fact having a job and getting paid is better than not having a job.

I think I might have phrased that wrong. I'm not 100% opposed to retail, but I don't think it would be my first choice (then again, I've never worked before, so I can't say for sure).

And something retail like Best Buy would be totally fine. I enjoy that kind of stuff. But then there's retail like the new Ikea that's going to be opening a bit later this year. Never in a million years would I want to work at a store like Ikea.

And also, distance isn't as huge of an issue when it comes to earnings vs spending on gas. I don't pay for gas or maintenance. My parents take care of that. I'm lucky in that sense.

Movie theaters are a possibility. I'm going to wait to hear back from Safeway. I think I'm more likely to get a job there because it doesn't necessarily require sales experience like Best Buy wants.

Even if you're not paying for gas, you are still giving up more of your time to drive to a job that is far away. I guess if you're only working a couple days a week it may not be that big of a deal, but it does add up.

construction is good, I used to make 100$ a day as a laborer. which is pretty good working 5 days a week you can make 1,000 every two weeks. compared to when i worked for del taco i made less than 500$ a paycheck :( I hate working with customers I would rather look into a factory worker or laborer. but like everyone says take what you can get, you will most likely submit 10 applications before even getting a call back for an appointment. and remember you have impress them. if you are a geeky smart guy like me show off that you will be an asset to the company. also be prepared to be treated like crap. my first job was at a movie theater. I got duties like cleaning an entire movie room in less then 4 minutes (this included cleaning 20 rows of popcorn, taking out the trash and spraying the room to cover up the dipers and condoms i picked up)

Just to echo what others have already stated; you really can't be picky. You're young, have limited availability, and no experience. You're statistically likely to quit within the first 6 months, and there are many much more qualified people out there with better available hours than you looking for the same job.

Sorry if I come across as mean, but it's reality when you're young and looking for your first job. You do have a lot of advantages such as your own transportation, however.

When I was your age, my parents didn't give me shit. I saved up $30 bucks and bought a used lawn mower at a garage sale, then started my own lawn mowing business in my neighborhood to make some extra cash. I used that experience to help me get my first job- McDonald's. Yep, and yes, it sucks as bad as you think. I made $5 bucks an hour and hated everyday I worked. But hey, it was money, and I was able to save up and buy my own truck for $1500 (I thought I was rich!). After working there for over a year, I moved onto another job and so fourth as I slowly moved up in job quality and pay scale.

It's the cycle of the workforce. Almost everyone has had some shit job at some point, unless their parents or a friend hook them up, or they never get a job until they graduate from college. Even though I didn't like my job at McDonald's, it was experience I wouldn't want to forget.

so heres my :2cents3fo:,,, as every one is saying,, your young, dont be picky... At your age, with no work experience,, you have to face the facts... Your only options are going to have have to be either a minium wage cashiers job working retail or working in the resturant biz..

Reason I say this is,, you dont really need any experience to start those kinda jobs.. And in todays economic times,, your lucky to be able to find a job like that.. The jobs out there is getting harder and harder to find. You have people that have 4yr college degrees that used to work for huge companies that got laid off from their jobs and have no other choice but to work at places like best buy or sears just to have income.. You cant expect to find a good paying job right off the bat being so young and no work history,,

I would strongly suggest that you change your mind about the resturant biz.. Im not talking about working at wendys or Mc'ds flipping burgers,,, I mean getting into a sit down resturant like Red Robin or chilis or something like that and start yourself off as a busser.. Most resturants pay their bussers a base wage and then the waiters tip them out,, You can make pretty good money doing that,, usually about 10hr when you break it down of base + tips. Then once you get a few months experience in that you can move up to being a waiter.. Waiters can make anywhere from 10 to 20hr.. Ya as the others say, it can be tough to get away from it cause you can make easy money quickly, but its also a very flexable job.. you usually only have to work about a 5-6 hr shift and if you ever need a day off, theres always some other coworker that is looking to pick up a shift..

So before you put the resturant biz on the bottom of your list, I would strongly look into it and consider your options.. You will with out a doubt make more money waiting tables than you will checking people out at best buy or any other cashier job working a full 8hr shift..

I started out in food service as well. But, I was a back of the house guy. Try and find a local eating place, not a big chain, and ask to speak to the manager. Try to get in as a dishwasher and move up from there. I spent 2 months washing dishes at a mexican food place in Evergreen, then quickly transitioned to food prep work. I was then able to get a job at the local country club as a line cook. I was 14 when I started at the mexican place and 16 when I started in the country club.

Another option is landscaping. It's pretty physical work, but I was making $10/hour doing it 9 years ago, so the pay isn't too bad. I did everything from planting trees to building intricate water features.

Oh yea I forgot about landscaping. I did that for a few months one summer working for my friend's dad. Did a lot of large scale lawn mowing and picking up trash for the city and stuff. I didn't get to participate in any of the complicated stuff. But I did make about $9/hr 12 years ago. It is hard work though and if you slack, they will can you, which ended up happening to me lol. I'm not a manual labor kind of guy.

It's a pretty easy job. Repetitive, but easy. Good luck!

Yeah goodluck! Also - since it's your first job...if they tell you to come in on different days after school - don't argue with them. Just be grateful you may have a job.

I want to move to the Denver area but AT&T call center is the only one here in pueblo. I already drive 80 miles round trip - I can't see myself driving 120 miles lol. I wish there was another call center in Denver I can move to - otherwise I'm stuck in the springs as other jobs are not secured it seems :(

I say go for a restaurant job. It will be fun, make new friends, and you'll develop good work and social skills.

Plus with a restaurant job, you typically get free food or at least discounted food. That was a plus for me since my parents made me buy my own food when I turned 16.
