You can't have the Furai...

Postby speedjunkie » Wed Nov 02, 2011 9:14

...but you can have this!

I was looking into building a DIY version of the Ariel Atom (rather seeing about how much it would cost first) and I remembered seeing this car online a few weeks ago. I still love the Atom and I think it would be really fun, but it all depends on how much it would cost to build one, and if I could luck into the skill and funds to do it haha. But if I had my choice (or $100k+) I would totally get this one.

This thing is pure sex. It doesn't matter to me if it has an extra seat, I'm not married and don't need to haul people around in a fun car. An extra seat would be nice to show someone how quick it is. But other than that, no need. This would be purely for fun. And oh what fun it would be.

I would die driving that, pretty sure. But it's sick.

Looks badass. I think something is up with their gear ratios though for the transmission and differential. Or I'm just not used to seeing them in that notation. If I'm reading it right 1st gear would top out at 5mph, lol.

I think it's an awesome, awesome marvel of engineering for a road car, but IMO the Atom is superior. The base model Atom with the NA Civic Type-R K20 motor costs just a little more than half of this, plus it has an extra seat to take a friend with you, and it's performance is damn near similar.

I like the Atom V8, but at more than $130k it's more the double the price of the original Atom or even the supercharged Atom. It's is mind boggling quick, but it's almost too quick to the point it's useless. The biggest advantage of the V8 Atom is the air-shifted sequential transmission which changes gears faster than an F1 car, and so quickly there is no appreciable drop in power.

I'd still look into the Atom more Eric. I would love one for myself too!

A friend of mine used to have an Atom. He got rid of it in favor of a Spec 944 because he was tired of being so much faster than everyone on the track and wanted to race competitively, lol.

I immediately thought of this:

http://www.murtayasportscars.co.uk/design.html

WRX/STi based roadster roadster. Requires a donor Impreza, but I think it would be fairly reasonable. Plus, with a few upgrades to the engine, you can easily be pushing 400awhp in a lightweight car. And AWD. What's not to love?

But no seriously, that thing looks KICK ###!

That's something I might actually consider building someday. Would be a helluva fun project for sure.

It would need a lot more oomph than just the stock 1.8L though. Some form of forced induction would be a must.

When it comes to building it myself, I believe I could build a Mono for just as little as an Atom. Obviously if I bought one, then we can see the difference. I like the center seating, don't have to worry about weight distribution if you don't have someone riding with you like in the Atom (not that it matters much). But like I said, having the extra seat doesn't matter much to me anyone.

When it all comes down to it though, this doesn't have anything to do with needs or what's sensible, this is solely about wants and emotional attachment. I think this car is sexier than the Atom and it performs about the same. And considering I'd put a rotary on both of them, performance doesn't differentiate between them much lol.

YES somone finally mentioned a lotus 7 variant! chris i am very impressed.
the 7 is the epitome of a sportscar.. lightness. not too much power. simplicity and it handles like a flea. plus 520hp per ton... same power to weight as a bugatti veyron. and gets almost the same mpg as a small economy car.
plus you can have one for around/under 30k.... take that atom!

you want a fast nimble car.. sounds gorgeous. the new model has awd. and breaks the 0-60 car world record in under 2.9seconds

^That's pretty baller lol.

I remember hearing that when the Atom first came out the NA model was around $35k while the boosted model was around $70k, but now I see they are on their 3rd version already so I'm not sure what prices are anymore.
