I don't think tut probably even knows what a VPN is, lol. (no offense tut). And you don't need usernames and passwords if you just share it for everyone (one time setup) and then anytime you upgrade or reload, yes, you do have to reconnect it (one time two minute setup each time).

/shrug, I've had years of trouble-free printing too. Not saying a print server is a bad thing, just saying it isn't necessary and some of the reasons you gave, like having to reconnect to it anytime you upgrade or reload, apply to a print server too. But it's a quick, two-minute thing that anyone can do so it's hardly a detraction.

And I think most people probably have their printer in the room with their computer(s), so having to have it near the computer isn't usually an issue. I think it's less common for people to have Ethernet elsewhere in the house to be able to locate the printer centrally, if you're not using a wireless printer or print server.

Just saying there's other options out there that cost less (nothing) and do the same thing.

Laptop arrived safely. Well, actually I picked it up last night- as I didn't want it bouncing around in another FedEx truck. Printer should be here on Monday.

So... any particular reason why the new lapT would be uber slow to load a page?
Any steps I need to do after firing this baby up for the first time?

Define slow. Webpage load slow like a slow connection? Or webpage render slow like crappy video card?

This is pathetic. I don't even get the joke, if there is one. Not sure what formatting entails or OS.

Slow as in, I type a web address and it just sits there with the "busy" icon-- then the web address loads (read: appears) like 3-5 minutes later:mellow:

- I've read that I need to download a firewall, such as "online armor" or something.
- Do I need to download some sort of antivirus/spyware?
- Also that I shouldn't use the IE that is currently set up on the comp- but rather Mozilla or something else?

Cliff notes: I unwrapped the PC, plugged it in, connected to my wireless network-- that's it. I wasn't sure if I need to do anything else before I start "using" this bad boy.

Format: Erase absolutely everything on the hard drive and start fresh
OS: Operating system - aka Windows 7 in your case

If you format the hard drive and reinstall windows, it will get rid of all the crap that the manufacturer puts on the computer that is pointless and useless for your needs and just slows it down.

As for anti-virus: I recommend Avast if you want a free program. For paid stuff, go with ESET.

Internet Explorer is a POS web browser and has entirely too many security flaws. Download Mozilla Firefox, Opera, or Google Chrome instead. They are all much better.

Sounds like a slow connection problem or browser problem to me. First try a new browser since you can't too much with your connection. Or you can try using wired instead of wireless and see if that makes a difference.

Definitely would not skip straight to formatting, especially as a less-experienced computer user. Like Batman said, try another browser. Chrome is the fastest in my opinion. Firefox is just as garbage as IE to me and gets just as bogged down by crap over time. I only use it for very specific things like LogMeIn because it handles that plugin the best.

Also try plugging it into the router directly, like Batman said. Make sure you turn off the wireless antenna before doing this so you know it's running off the wire and not wireless. Usually there will either be a switch to do this, or you'll have a key that has a little antenna or signal icon that will turn it off.

Those two things will eliminate two of the most likely causes for slow page loading.

Thanks for the link Chris.

Thanks Erod- I actually did choose to download Chrome. The 'formatting' proved to be out of my comfort zone and as such, I just put Avast on there.

So far so good....

Internet 'slowness' problem seems to have gone away...

Oh, one more thing. You should install this little utility to keep your computer clean. It's called CCleaner (Crap Cleaner). I usually set it to run on every start up. It cleans all your temp files and a bunch of other crap that's on you computer that you don't need to keep. Plus, a bunch of other stuff like easy way to disable unnecessary start up programs (makes your PC boot faster), delete restore points, etc.

I'll PM you Malwarebytes.
