Xbox or PS3
wow guys,, thanks for all the good info.. I do tend to play more FPS games than anything else.. I love battlefield2 and back in the day I was pretty top ranked in Socom on the PS2 lol.. So ya, online play is a lil more important to look for.. So I think I will lean more towards the Xbox right now.. So next question,, should I get the best of the best and get the 320gb version?

Some background information on me, I've been a gamer since 1993. Owned a SNES (super nintendo) Nintendo 64, GameCube, PSone, PS2, PS3, Gameboy, GBA, DS, Wii. Never got into playing the Sega Genesis or interested in their games or consoles, but after I owned the PS2 in 2005, start to diversify my genres.
My favorite games are RPGs, FPS, platformers, racing and adventure such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy series, Mario Series, anything from SquareEnix, Capcom, Nintendo, Namco and Sega. There's other companies that I like but I'm not going to mention them all.

Go for the best of the best or whatever is in ur budget. The Xbox only comes in a 4gb or 250 Gb. ($200 and $300) They also have Kinect bundles that save u 50 bucks from buying the Kinect separate. Just an fyi. Umm if u can find it they have a silver console that is halo reach branded, comes with the game and has an extra controller for 400. Not sure if the hd is bigger.
Honestly though I would buy the 4gb (matte black version. The 250Gb is a gloss black I am not a fan of.) and buy my own 250gb hd. If you go that route you will save some money. I can send u links to the files you will need so it works if u choose that path. Do keep in mind though that you will have to buy a certain brand and model of HDD for it to work with those files and the xbox.
It will save you about $50 so it's up to you.
There's also the 250gb version with Kinect for $399, but these "motion" gaming systems are a whole other thing that I just can't get into. My Wii has sat collecting dust for months and when I do play it's a normal game like Super Mario Galaxy 2, not an overexaggerated motion game.
As for making your own hard drive. I wouldn't do it if you use Xbox Live. Microsoft considers it tampering with the console and people's consoles have been known to get banned for it. They see it as you hacking into the hard drive and possibly altering game saves which is against the ToS. I don't see the big need for a huge hard drive anyway, unless you download so much DLC that your hard drive is full from it all. Yea, you can load games to it so they load faster but that isn't worth the extra cash to me, although 4gb is ridiculously small as some DLC is a gig or more so if those are your only two choices then I would definitely get the 250gb one.
Trust me though, I've had a couple consoles banned for modding, heh. They don't mess around with that stuff. Either pony up for the legit HDD or plan on staying off of Live, which I do have a console I use strictly offline and one that I use online that is untouched.

LOL yeah. I havn't heard of anyone getting banned for using their own hard drive. Not sure there is a way for them to know. I have a console I fixed and had to hack it to install a new DVD drive. I can play burned games on it and all and have played online and have not been banned. It is not my primary console though. I don't think they could tell that the HDD is not their official one since the files and drive you are using are what are in Xboxs to begin with. It's like you went to the store and bought their HDD but really you didn't.
I had the 20GB one and I used up space on that quick. I didn't think that I would ever use 20GB but DLC and Arcade games add up quickly. I have a 120 GB HDD and am thinking of putting in a 250 GB when I get my replacement console.
I'm still using my original 20gb hard drive from my launch day console :\ My friend has at least that much in Rock Band DLC alone lol. My PS3 is 60gb and with all these newer games needing 5-7gb loaded on the HDD I may run out of space on it sooner or later.

Like everyone else has said, look at the exclusives on each console and decide which system you want. I am not partial to any system, owned the sega master system, SNES, N64, PS1, dreamcast, PS2 and now I own a 360 and a wii. I agree with erod on each subject he touched up on. Controller, online play, online interface, and Forza are all awesome. Also, Left 4 Dead (1 & 2) are amazing games to play with your friends. If you are into online gaming, see what system your friends play on.

I wasn't to sure how old the kiddos were but that's why I mentioned the Kinect above. It's only $100 more if bundled with the system.

My original 20gb HDD is on the second console I fixed. I thought the same thing. No way am I gonna use 20GB. But I did. I have like 50GB left on my 120 GB HDD. That's after deleting all the game clips and demos and games I had installed to it for faster loading. lol. If your too lazy to go to the store and find an older game and you do a digital download there is 8GB you can say good bye to. If you start buying movies there go more. A lot of the good arcade games are 2+ GB. Then updates for games are a few MB each. It all adds up. I can't believe you still have the 20GB HDD.

Well, I don't download movies to my Xbox. I have about 600GB of movies on my PC that the Xbox/PS3 have access to. I'm not really into the XBLA games so I only have a couple of those. And I haven't done a digital download of any games. So really it's just game updates and a few DLC things. Don't have any music on there either cause again I have many many gigs on my PC served up to the Xbox/PS3.

Just beat my son in 3 out of four matches of Powerstone 2 on Saturday. What's crazy though is how much you still have to pay for a Dreamcast network adapter!!!!!! Oh and no other console has a VMU yet, UMMMMM WHY NOT?

Thought I'd throw in my .02
I have the new xbox 360 "slim", ps3, and wii
If I could only have one, and I already own a bluray player... I'd get the new Xbox Slim. Although I am currently addicted to DC Universe Online, which is only on PS3 sadly.
My reasons why
-PS3 online sucks, it is laggy, glitchy, and has numerous network issues. See below why that can be a PITA
-Installing games... it's a console, but many games require mandatory installs. If you have to install even 1GB it can take forever as the disc reads at 2x speed, hurray. Nothing sucks more than buying a game, then having to wait over an hour to play...if your lucky.
-Game updates, firmware updates, or other online downloads... SLOW
The PS3 has a very serious issue with network performance when involving the Playstation Network, which is just about everything. The download speeds are generally limited to about 100-200kbs in my testing, no matter how fast your Broadband speed is, mine is 15mbps. This makes the 100mb firmware updates take about an hour to complete.
-INSTALLS... I mentioned it above, but the PS3 requires everything be installed... demo's, firmware, etc. It acts very similar to a PC instead of console.
-Wireless G, again, if you are lucky. I stream stuff from my pc a lot and HD content will NOT stream through the PS3. Standard Movies often struggle. Plus side is you can copy items over wireless to the PS3 then play it from the HDD. But that's a bit annoying.
-HDD upgrade. Sure, it uses a standard laptop drive... but holy crap is the process REALLY not thought out. I swapped my Xbox one in 10 minutes using the Transfer kit that MS made. It was more money, but the overall experience was zero stress. I value that.
There's a LOT of positives about the console too, both consoles actually. The Xbox had a crappy trackrecord with the older console so that's a HUGE negative against it, but in my own experience, my biggest frustrations have come from the PS3 because it has day-to-day issues, and it's widely known. But since the online service is completely free, you can't complain too much I suppose.
