Colt does call one of its own a HBAR. Does that mean it IS a Colt? A standard AR from one of the "good" brands can be had as cheap as $600 for used and nearer $1000-1200 for new. In that price range you can find most anything. Colts tend to fetch about twice that for used and new. Colt was the only game in town years ago. Bushmaster, Olympic and a few others are considered the best gun to money ratio. There was a gun shop in the south end of town that had a varmit set up (Olympic with heavy bbl and scope) for about $1100.
The AR platform is flexible, durrable, accurate and parts are easy to find. The AK is reliable......um............it almost always goes bang.

The AK is more of a fun thing, but not sure I want a fun thing that hardly gets used at the prices I am seeing. The AR would see more use theoretically, as i used to love going after groundhogs in PA, but as easy as it would seem to be, I haven't found a place to chase after the little western variant (aka prarie dog). I have a Rem Model 788 with the sproting barrel chambered in .222. Interesting gun, drives tacks, but not the safest "safety" in the world (when you push the bolt forward, it pushes the safety to "fire".

Most of the P-dog shooting I've done is East Colorado. Have people I know near Rocky Ford that has access to some great shootin'.
I doubt all is well on your Rem. All of my Remington Bolts are safety on till you over ride it. Find a smith, bet it is a cheap fix.
That .222 is a great round but the .223/5.56 has made it kind of obsolete. There is still a following of bench rest shooters and the .222. Finding something chambered in it these day is harder than 25-30 years ago. If you do end up with a .223 be careful with keeping the ammo straight.

I got a G2X Tactical LED and holy mother it is bright!

Do you happen to have a 788? I remember looking into this a while back, and thought I came to the conclusion that this is how they were, but i need to look into it. It is the first gun I ever bought.
No, my Remingtons tend to pre-date the 788 (which came out in 1967)! I have a 521 and about 3 721's, those were discontinued in 1962 when it was replaced by the 700 (still in production).
I have other Remingtons, but they tend not to be bolt guns. 11, 11-48, 1100 and 1187 are some of my favorite Rems.

Found this:
"Rem. had alot of issues with the 600/660 years ago, the safety's on the 788's by design allmost seem to be spring loaded to the fire position, the slightest pressure seems to take the safety off, once the detent becomes a lil worn it is a liability it seems. Take it to a smith maybe he can work it down till its satisfactory."
So seems like a GS is in my future. Anyt recommendations?
I had a great smith who is now retired. Not sure who to use these days. There is a gun smith school near Colfax and Kipling. I hear that is a great place to get work done - the price is right but the wait can be long. I do a fair amount of buisness (not smith work yet) at Green Mountain Guns near Wadsworth and Hwy 285/Hampden. If nothing else give them a try. They have a great consignment selection on used guns. East side of town try Firing Line (225 & Alameda-ish).

With the recent increase in ammo prices, I've decided to order a case of Wolf ammo for my AR because they are much cheaper than others... I know, I know, they're crap... Well I did plenty of research on why SOME people have issues with them because they're steel case ammo while A LOT of peeps seems to have zero issues with them in their AR... to make a long story short, it's because they are steel case (not lacquer coated like some people think, which it's not anymore) and it doesn't expand like brass does, it doesn't make as good of a seal in the chamber and you get a lot of gas blow back into the chamber and dirty it up. Some guns that have tight chamber (some say out of spec) like Bushmaster will have issues with them and will cause the casing to get stuck with just a few 10 rounds.
I read a lot a reviews and people that have DPMS upper shoot them just fine.
Good news! I have DPMS upper and I've shot 100+ rounds of Wolf over the weekend with zero failures. I even did rapid fire with no issues. The accuracy is about the same as the other brands at 50 yds. I didn't try anything further than that this time... maybe next time. I wanted to play more with my .22 conversion and try out my LC9.
If you decide to try Wolf and just knowing how the steel ammo function compare to brass, I would not mix brass ammo after shooting steel case on that same day (before you can clean it) just to be on the safe side. If you want to shoot steel case that day just stick with steel case that day. When you're done, just spend an extra 5 mins while cleaning your gun.
I didn't notice my gun being any dirtier than usual. But knowing how steel case function, I just spend a little extra time cleaning the chamber just to be safe. Chamber brush is your friend.
FYI - I tested with Wolf 62gr soft point. Comes out to about 23 cents per round, which is about the same as 9mm. VS. about around 40 cents per round if you're lucky these days.
I mentioned Wolf to a friend of a friend that has an AR and before I can finish my sentence he just say that it's crap and that he had all kinds of problems with it. So, I asked him what kind of AR he has... he answered Bushmaster. I just smiled and said, that's why you have problems with it and I explained to him why he had issues... and that confirmed my research/theory.

And my AR is now complete. UPS man dropped off my EOTech and Primary Arms 3x magnifier. If you are in the market for optics check out Primary Arms, they have excellent prices and I got their 3x magnifier for free with the order of my EOTech.

I'm going to have a new shop in C-Rock take a look at it. The guys there are very passionate and I think they will do a good job. i'm going to see if they can bring my Rem 1100 back to a better condition as well (rear stock and finish). I would like to pick up a barrel for that that takes screw in chokes, but they aren't inexpensive.

What did you spill on your mirror? At first I thought your room had some giant spiderwebs or something before I realized that was a mirror and not a door.

some things are best left unknown.
Colombia,
Thats a good looking AR. I wish you guys hadn't started talking about them, because I want one now.
Have you used the vertical grip on the forestock to shoot, or is it more of a monopod for shooting off of a rest? I haven't handled one with that grip on there, but it looks like it would be uncomfortable to shoot from.

I just picked up a Mosin Nagant a few days ago. Just for something fun and cheap to shoot (that I won't be spraying bullets like I do with AR and other semi-auto guns) and also a piece of history. It's in pieces at the moment because I have to clean all of the cosmoline off it since it was stored since WWII ended. Mine was made in 1943 so most likely it has seen action. I'll put up the pic when I finish cleaning it and put back together. In the meantime, here's a pic of the ammo...
From left to right: .22LR, 9mm, .223/5.56x45 (this one in particular is .223), and 7.62x54R (new toy). Can't wait to shoot it.

I bought a bunch of surplus ammo that is in sealed spam cans which comes out to ~ 20 cents per round.
