I have the decorative stringers and the risers installed and primed. I need to do some light sanding and a coat of white paint. The treads will be installed this week.

Is that a hand carved baluster? I liked the 4x4, but this one is more to the wifes liking.

It isn't a hand carved newel. I actually bought it preassembled.

I actually bought all the newel posts here. This one is a 6x6 but all the others are a 3 1/2x3 1/2. http://www.stairwarehouse.com/4075-3-5--box-newel.html

They are a great company with quick shipping and good pricing. The quality is very good. The 3 1/2x3 1/2 are solid and the 6x6 is hollow. To install the 6x6 I used 2x's to attach to the floor structure and than I attached the newel to the 2x's. There is quite a bit of construction adhesive holding it together as well as 2 1/2" finish nails. I added the 2 screws you see in the pics as just an added attachment, they will be covered by the oak paneling I'm building.

I've been making progress but is had been slow going.

List of what to do this week in order:
-sand treads and risers
-stain treads, min 8 hours to dry
-seal treads, 2 coats, min 2 hours between coats but not more than 6
-install next newel on balcony (the one above the column)
-install first section of rail at balcony
-install oak paneling on floor stucture by stair
-install oak nosing
-install balisters and rail

Man this stuff looks like fun. I want to start upgrading my place soon. I may need some advice when that time comes haha.

it is fun at times but a ton of work. I can give you advice when it comes to that.

I picked up a Ryobi Corner Cat finish sander last night so I could get in the corners to sand down the filler. It was for sure worth the $30 it cost. It saved me hours of work.

The treads were sanded and refilled last night. Tonight I will be doing the final sanding and I plan to get the next newel post installed. Tomorow night will be the staining and friday will be the 4 coats of sealer. The sealer has to cure for 3 days before we car really walk on it so we will be using a ladder through the weekend.
