GRE? Psh...

Postby bellalyssa » Fri Oct 08, 2010 9:14

I can finally have a life again!! I took my GRE this morning, took me 2.5 hours. I am proud of my scores in comparison to the rest of the nation (520 Verbal and 610 Quantitative). I'm absolutely stoked that it's finished!!!

A word of advice, study for it if you have to take it. There are great books out there. I used the Sparknotes book and it really helped me. I haven't done math since high school and it was a great refresher. If you don't have to take it... don't. It's hell.

It appears we are unschooled if you will Lyssa. If this is what I think it is, that's damn impressive. Looking back, I don't know how I managed to get though school.

Congrats. I just took the Humanities CLEP test to get my last few credits and that thing was a pain in the *** to study for. Sounds like the GRE is much more broad though so even more stuff to study.

Right on! What are you planning to go to school for? I managed to avoid taking this to get into grad school, sounds like it was a good choice.

My main goal is to get into CSU's history program and study Medieval Middle Eastern History. The more long term goal is to teach on the collegiate level.

Back up is working for an intelligence agency. Two completely different fields but I think I can do either if I play my cards right.

6i: The GRE is a standardized test that universities use to see where applicant's strengths are. Some universities, depending on the program you want to get into, will want a higher score in the Verbal over the Quantitative or vice versa. A lot of people take it more than once to get the best score they can but there are very few people who score over a 550 or 600 on either section. The two sections are scored out of 800 points and adding them up gives you your composite score, but from what I've seen, universities really don't care about that.

I feel your pain. I am currently studying for the P.E. test (Professional Engineers License), but I'll be lucky to get through the P.E. test in the allotted 8 hours.

Patrick, are you taking the review course at CU-Denver? I have a buddy that teaches the engineering economics section. It seems those that don't take the review, don't do as well on the PE. One day I might take it, but right now it would do nothing for me if I had it.

PM me (I'm not on this forum much) if you don't know anything about the review and I'll see what I can find out through my buddy.

And go CSU!

Thanks for the offer Tom, but the CU-Denver review course is for those that have a degree in the big three, i.e. Civil, Mechanical and Electrical. The Mining Engineer PE test is for Mining Engineers, Geologists, and Mineral Processing. There are econmics on the test, but it's pretty simple. Just present and future value questions and some time value of money stuff.

The review course for my test already took place a few weeks ago. I didn't attend, but got the course notes from a buddy that did. Something about paying $2000 for a 1 week course didn't sit well with me.
