Another Fun-Filled Friday Night

Postby Stealth01 » Sat Dec 11, 2010 9:14

I had been asleep for about twenty minutes last night at 11:19 when the phone rang. It was my 18-year-old son, who was spending the night at a friend's house.

"Dad, Uh, I cut myself, and it's GONNA need stitches."

Great. So I jump into my jeans and fire up the MS6. Hauled A55 to his friend's house. Some monkey in a blue, debadged A4/S4 thought I was racing him because I was driving aggressively. I didn't even know he was there until I slowed and he pulled up beside me, matching speed and looking over at me. I ignored him, but did note to myself that he didn't catch me until I slowed down. :) Must've been the A4, now that I look back. An S4 would have had no trouble catching me.

Anyway, got to the house and it turns out my son, Andrew, had been trying to fix the band on his watch....WITH A HUNTING KNIFE. Knife slipped and sliced a nice two-inch gash in his index finger of his left hand.

So I threw him in the car and was doing about 15 over on the way tot eh ER when I got hit with a blast of Ka-band on the radar detector. Never saw the cop, but it was full-strength, so he was within a half mile. The signal went away and I merged onto a road with a 55mph limit. I punched it up to...uh...significantly higher than that, as my son was bleeding pretty profusely. Couple red lights later, I looked in my mirror and found the cop. RIGHT on my butt. Must've taken him awhile to catch up, assuming it was the same cop that had hit me with his radar.

That calmed me down and I did the limit the rest of the way. He lost interest and used his discretion let me go without pulling me over. Probably figured that since I didn't appear drunk, and there were two hospitals on that road, that I was probably heading to the ER, meaning he had bigger fish to fry. Thank you, Mr. LEO, for the discretion.

Got home around 2:30 after about ten shots of pain killer, seven stitches, and 40 minutes of direct pressure to stop the bleeding.

Andrew has his AFROTC scholarship interview Sunday. I guess we'll have to practice a response to the question, "So what happened to your finger?"

Yeah. He's going in the Air Force, and I reminded him that one thing the AF will DRILL into him is "use the right tool for the job." Could've been a lot worse--he could have dripped blood on my two-toned leather! :)

That second pic doesn't show the whole cut. There's a part of it forward on the finger that's stuck closed, and some that doesn't show under the trail of blood. It was a pretty impressive cut.

But when I was his age, I did the same thing to my thumb trying to make a knock on an arrow. LOL. WHy couldn't I pass on that less genetically?

You should have taken a pic of the gash when you first got there. :D

Wanted to, but decided direct pressure to stem the bleeding was more important. :D

Yeah, I told him that since he's 18, he can handle these on his own, but that he made the right call in getting help this time. He had one friend there who could have driven him to the ER, but that friend got sick when he saw the cut and probably wasn't in the best shape to drive. LOL.

Here are the shots while changing the dressing today:

The non-stick pad the ER put on had slid, so the gauze initially stuck to the wound, but as you can see, it's already started to heal.
