So. I was going to wait to save up for my 1911.

but after getting a gun flashed at us this weekend buy 3 west side something or other "gangstas" as they called themselves and told us "niggats are gonna get F**ked up and shot" because we told this car to slow down because alot of children INCLUDING my Friend's kid plays on that street. and he slid the Cadillac around the corner and almost lost control doing 45+ in a 20 zone

I have decided I really need to get one..

SOO anyone have a home/personal defense suitable pistol for sale? preferably colorado springs area?
If not I may be heading down to a gunstore this week.. my buddy told me about a S&W sigma .40 for sale for 329ish
im actually kinda liking the stats on it. its a 14+1 round setup and yet is still small

Get an automatic shotgun...the wannabe gangstas will think twice haha.

I'm buying my buddy's Taurus 45 when I get back for $300, but I really want a Sig. My commander shoots competitively for Sig and he's going to see about getting us a set with our Squadron logo engraved on it, should be around $600. I'm DEFINITELY doing that haha.

Good luck with those POS fake thugs. Let them kill a kid in the neighborhood...you won't have to shoot them, the whole neighborhood will take care of that disease.

.40 is awful to start with IMO. I would start with a 9mm to be honest. Easy and cheap(er) ammo allows for LOTS of practice, which is the most important thing over any other sort of ballistic caliber decision. I shoot a lot (too much it seems, wallet hates me) and from my experience, the .40 is a weird round. It's snappy and has worse muzzle lift than a .45, which is a better round anyway, and has marginally better ballistics than the 9mm, which is cheaper and has less recoil. So for home defense, I'd go 9mm in something that has at least 15 rounds. One of my favorite choices for a good home defense weapon is the Springfield XDM 4.5 in 9mm. It has a 19+1 round capacity, 4.5 inch barrel and is extremely comfortable to shoot. Another thing I would highly consider with your home defense gun is also a tactical flashlight OR a gun-light mounted on the pic rail. Many auto's now have lower pic rails for accessories and a gun light is a great investment for home use.

I agree with what he said^^ about the .40, never have liked the round myself.

My personal favorite if you can afford it is a H&K USP in 9mm or .45., but the Springfeild is a great gun for the money. Any of the S&W autos are pretty good too. Also the 1911 you are saving up for is not a bad idea either, and I would recommend a Para-Ordanance hi-cap if your budget allows- just really great guns to shoot.

next time get his plate number and call the cops, coppers love busting 'gangsta's' on probation with illegal guns driving recklessly, it's way easier/safer than you getting into a neighborhood shootout...

HAving a .40 S&W, I agree with the reviews. It is a snappy round. I enjoy shooting it though because of the type of feedback. Probably odd of me. I leaned that way for myself because it is used by federal agencies. I had considered a career change.

Consider that shooting a smaller round more accurately may improve your chances. Stopping power is really valuable, but you have to hit your target first. One of my favorite guns to shoot way back when was a .38 Beretta. I was reliably much more accurate with that than anything larger, despite liking the bigger boom a .45 makes. A shootout happens under sub-ideal conditions with adrenaline pumping and your ability to shoot accurately will be vastly impaired as compared to a range. I'll also second the advice to consider a shotgun. A 12ga with birdshot (or other finer shot) at shorter ranges will do immense damage and be more likely to hit something than almost any other firearm. The other bonus is that you're way less likely to put a round through your wall into someone else's house and the finer shot will travel less far generally that something heavier. Also, the sound of a pump racking is about the most intimidating sound known to humanity, reducing the chances that you'll have to pull the trigger in the first place. Finally, consider that having a gun present will massively escalate a confrontation. If it comes to that, having a firearm yourself is a good idea, but it has to be shown wisely. This isn't always easy to do if adrenaline or ego get in the way and there is plenty of research out there that suggests that the presence of a firearm in a confrontation often works out badly for both parties involved. My public defender wife backs this up, as she sees loads of cases where things got a little heated and someone got shot instead of just getting beaten up. Don't underestimate the ability of human stupidity (my own included) to override common sense under difficult conditions.

agree with parts. Although having a gun present and presenting a gun should be defined as separate things. The shotgun is the best for any sort of home or zombie defense. One of the other best things, is taking some classes. Not on just shooting, but on scenarios, laws, etc. Really can put things in perspective.

oh no. Im not the kind of guy to flash it about. I have more than enough training to keep calm in the situation. And if he didnt really have a gun. theres no need to drop the fact that I had one. I would much rather go for my hands anyway. in situations like that is my opinion that weapons are for pussies. If you are too weak to beat my ###. dont talk shit and hide behind an equalizer. doesnt make you a tough guy.

to be honest, I Just feel more comfortable having it present as a last resort scenario. I had the piece of mind to step back incase he tried to get out with a knife that i could just bend down and pick up my big bertha torque wrench but if he came out with a gun we were sol.

I have a 20guage youth shotgun beside my bed. Ive had it since i was a kid. and its actually great for home defense because its short enough to go around corners easy and not put you in the reaching range.

I actually prefer the 9mm round myself. i shoot expert almost every time qualifications came around with a m9. And like ive argued many times before. i will bet my life that even ignoring the double tap tactic. just a single defensive round like the hydrashock. placed center mass will stop a home intruder just as well as any .40+ yet reduces the chances of going THROUGH my house and into the neighbors.
plus at first I wanted 9mm for range time. because I thought it was cheaper. so i could practice more. but looking at bulk ammo. .45 is not much more expensive at all compared to 9mm. only about 5 bucks per box of 50 more....

except 9mm wins the award for penetration. Defensive rounds reduce that though. Hornady Crit Defense FTW on that topic.

Totally agree with you, could have made that clearer. Having a firearm present is a good thing as long as you're not an asshat about it. Most people are more likely to escalate conflict if they have a firearm. How much depends on the person and a certain level of introspection about how likely you are to go Rambo on someone is valuable. Classes are extremely good advice and I suspect provide some opportunities for looking at how you'll respond to a given situation.
