Ok guys, I spoke directly to the kit manufacturer today. The kit is 60-90 days from being available. Good news is that they will sell direct to me, so when I set up my account with them, I should be able to get a little bit better price. We'll find out when I do that. So hang tight, waiting a little longer is better than paying double the price.

That's cool. It'll give me time to save up and do everything at once. I may get the head unit from a freind of my body man. His buddy is a manager at a Car toys I think so if he can get a better deal for the Alpine unit I'll go that way. The rest is from you. ie. Dashkit and Steering control adapter.

Is there a way you can have them send you a "test" kit that we can "test" in my car? Like NOW? :D

So I went to car toys today and I liked the Alpine IVA-W505 but I also saw a Kenwood I liked. What kinda deal can you do on this one? Kenwood Excelon DNX8120? I just like the minimal buttons on the front and that the buttons it does have are flush with the screen and don't pop out.

Friends don't let friends buy Kenwood. But that price is off by $209 at online car stereo. That unit is listed on the website at $1159.00 today. Even for $950, I'd still go with a pioneer or an Alpine WAY before a Kenwood.

Ok before you all go and blow 5,6 or 700.00 for some KIT to install head unit in your rides... there is a very well known company here int eh US call Metra... they are releasing two different kits for the RX-8's in about a months time. and at full retail will be considerably less... I can not post the exact pricing ( do know cost on it, but will not be posting it here as that would be a preach of contracts). As the OFFICAL sponsor of the Colorado Mazda Club, I will provide you with special package deals on everything you need to get a unit in your vehicle.

though I do not deal in Pioneer.. I am able to get them if it is a must have situation... I will not honor the pricing listed previously in this post, but again I will make special package deals..... I am also in the works of picking up Alpine.. I also sell Kenwood Excelon (Jimmy... few buttons.... tons of stuff you would have no Idea what to do with) (LOL)... I will keep everyone posted as to when I am able to get the kits in hand (get a preview).

I also want to WARN all of you that are looking into buying from online dealers... 99% of them are not in anyway authorized dealers of the products they sell so when something does wrong and you need some kind of warranty.... there will not be one there available for you from the people that sold to you much less the manufacture (yes they all track serial numbers and will know where it came from orginally)

Jimmy,

there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Kenwood units. though I would go the direction of the DDX812 with the add on nav.... offers more flexability in the future.

Kenwood: Built in bluetooth, a bit of an EQ (not great but functional) built in Time alignment, subwoofer control, a few other audio customization features.... i-pod controls with video ipod available... secondary USB that can be used for many functions. touch screen, DVD, sirius and/or XM ready
(but I can tell you that even at 1159.99 you will get absolutley no warranty from your online supplier)(i will tell you for the DNX8120 this is at/below dealer cost)

Alpine.... again has good sound quality, but not enough to cuz an over turn in choices based on this alone...

Jimmy, this deck is actually at a disadvantage for you due to the aftermarket amps you have.... the Alpine is lacking the 5 volt output of the Kenwood RCA's, alpine has 2volt rca outputs.

Alpine does not have built in bluetooth, and the navigation system a portable and not as complete as the Garmin System in the Kenwood. to get some of the built in tunablity features of the kenwood you have to buy the Imprint processor.

For the system you have set up at this time.... the Kenwood just seems to stand out in capabilites. for someone else this may not be the case.

Hope this help you out Jimmy.

In my twenty years of install experience, I have seen which manufacturers have dependability problems and which ones do not. From what I have seen, ther is no better track record of problem free service than Alpine offers. I have worked for more than one Kenwood dealer and even been the final vote to drop Kenwood from one store due to the numerous failures of head units. Yes, that particular unit has 5volt pre-outs' vs. the Alpine's 2volt. But when you're laying out that kind of cash, shouldn't it last for several years? My opinion is my opinion, but I do have the experience and the schooling to give you a very well educated opinion. For years I watched the manufacturers go through the phases of what they offer in terms of flashing lights and features. What I have leaned towards is sound quality and longevity. Some feauters play into the sound quality aspect, some don't. But what it comes down to in the end is what makes you happy. I recommend you listen to the products side by side to make your final decision. I've built show cars for Alpine, Rockford, and infinity. The simplist, best sounding was the Alpine, by a long shot. The Infinty car was a 6000 Watt system with multiple video screens, and the Rockfor Truck was 8000 Watts with 18 speakers in a standard cab Chey truck. It played at 158.6 dB in the bay at Soundtrack in Colorado Springs. It didn't sound great because the product wasn't high quality. You could walk to the Infinity car next to it and the sound quality difference was amazing. Choose your source unit very carefully, because it defines the sound of your entire system.

Choices choices.....This is all so confusing me.......I have no way of listening to both of the units throught the same speakers. They are in different booths at cartoys and more than likely through different speakers. then take into acount the different sizes of the booths. So it sounds like sound quality has to also do with the HU as well as the speakers. No? I want something that I can trust to be there and working 2, 3, 4 years from now and even longer without a problem.

I really don't care to much for nav cause I can just use my phone. (but its always a nice option). I really have no need for ipod crap and I would like the ability to have add on or built in Bluetooth. I do have an extra xbox 360 I bought off ebay and fixed that I may like to add into the car. It's just been sitting as my backup for about a year.

For some reason the huge price difference form $1500 at car toys to $850 online with the kewood deck it may not be the way to go. The Alpine did not have a significant price difference at all and Gold can get it for $50 bucks more than the kenwood. As far as the UI goes between the kenwood and Alpine the kenwood seems like it has a good concept but doesn't feel right. The Alpin may not have been as "cool" but it was easier to use and find menues and all for some reason.

tough choice. We will see when the dashkit is available.

My alpine deck is 6 years old and still works great and I lived on a gravel road most of that time. Although it is not a screen.
