I heard that it is a little added insurance, but I feel that I found a better solution. I purchased an aluminum heat shield from Injen and faced it towards the vents and seems to work very well. It is basicly the same as covering up the vents. the heat shield covers half of the filter but does not restrict any air flow. Check out this page.

yeah I have a cover on mine at all times. Air goes through the mesh just fine.
