So has anyone ever heard of doing a FWD to RWD swap in a 2gen mx6? just wondering. Been thinking about going rotary but the only thing I've found in my price range is a totaled/t-boned rx7. just wondering if it was possible or am I fouling out??

What kind of RX-7 are you looking at? What is it you are looking to spend? What do you want out of it?
I would stay away from doing a FWD to RWD swap on any car unless you have amazing fab skills and a ton of money.

good with a torch an a MIG welder plenty of time when i'm not at work, watching my kids or trying to sleep to repeat the cycle. I just like the body of the mx6 and like the power of the rx7. loking at getting the 2rotor along with the rest of the drive train. Although wouldn't turn down a decent running rx7 just to drive either. Have never worked on one but from the looking i've done i would like to try...I love to tinker and try and then beat the living daylights out of my self with tools while I make it work. Made my firs do-kart out of a 35hp articat snowmobile motor and a bunch of steel tubing. ran great till my aunt parked it up a tree. built my first motor cycle out of a horizontal shaft 5 1/4hp briggs and an old murray 10speed. even thought about taking a totaled out mazda (preferably a 4cyl) and turning it into a small road legal buggy for back and forth to work in the summer. home made a convertible s10 and even had a fold down front glass. just a thought though.

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2937824 Here is a link to a RWD V8 Probe:
http://www.9500rpm.com/probe/ it is a hell of a lot more work than most people could do. If it is something you could tackle than all power to you.
As for the RX-7 Rotary motor in an MX6, there are a lot of motor choices.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_Wankel_engineBest choices:
75-80 13B Carb
81-85 12A Carb
86-88 13B EFI
89-81 13B EFI
86-88 13B turbo II
89-91 13B turbo II
92-95 REW
I think that between those your best choices:
75-80 13B carb (no emisions)
89-91 EFI
89-91 Turbo II

Damn that would be a lot of work.... I've never been under mine long enough to check it out to that extent I thought some of these were built as awd's but I guess I was mistaken. Oh well pipe dreams, if you don't have 'em the whole world goes to shit.

From what I read they did make a AWD one. Some people did modify an FC RX-7 rear setup and got it to fit into the MX6. The problem is the RWD tranny. Most AWD cars use a modified FWD setup with an added trasfer case so the only thing under the cab is the driveshaft and exhaust. But RWD cars have the motor going front to back and the tranny behind it so there is a tranny hump in the cab. So you will have to cut out the whole center of the floor to get the tranny to fit. After you have made the room for the setup, you still have to look at mounting it. So if you want a rotary car than you will probably want an RX-7.
If you were starting with a RWD car like the Miata, than it isn't all that much work.
If you want to see what I'm talking about, you could come down to my place in the springs and we could compare cars.

got to thinking...would it be possible to find one of the awd tranny's to put in my car? are there even any available? have tried searching for one but have had no luck since I only have net at work and at the in-laws.

With the amount of work and custom fabrication that goes into a drivetrain conversion, you're probably better off just buying another cheap car that's already the drivetrain you are looking for.

From what I read it wasn't available in the US but I could be wrong.
