I'm getting annoyed now.

I replaced the battery, the starting issue has not gone away. At this point, I know it isn't the battery or the starter. It's the same issue happening that I posted at the beginning of this thread.

I'm leaning toward the coil packs or an internal fueling issue. The spark plugs are fine, I had one cylinder that was running lean but the fuel injector cleaner took care of that.

I'm still getting the Large Emissions Leak CEL (FML!!!) and I'm going to have to take it into the dealer to get that shit checked out.

I just want my car to run correctly before I build it and mod the bejesus out of it. This may be too much to ask.

how is your distributor? my son's incorrectly installed walmart unit crapped out and the dang car wouldn't start. The plugs and battery had been checked/replaced.

I bet that CEL is related to your start issues.

Also, whats the exact CEL code that you're getting?

I've replaced the gas cap and the CEL is a P0455 "EVAP system leak detected (gross leak)"

We replaced the purge selonoid for this and it keeps coming up. I don't want to take it to the dealer so they can charge me $100 bucks to diagnose and then charge me up the *** to fix it.

DTC P0455 = evaporative emissions leak (gross leak) & P0456 is a small leak - you knew that one.

Monitored when:
ignition is off
intake temp is 5-35C (40-95F)
battery is above 11V
atmospheric pressure is 72.2KPA or greater (542mmHg, 21.3inHg)
Fuel tank is between 15 and 85%

This sets the light if it's been seen two consecutive drive cycles, or if it has a pending code set (meaning you weren't in the proper conditions in the last cycle - note above).

Causes per the workshop manual:
purge solenoid valve
evap system leak detection pump
loose / defective filler cap
charcoal canister
fuel tank
evap hose

any leaks in the above pieces will cause a failure, since the system can't hold pressure. I would assume that a fuel leak or leaking fuel injectors could do the same thing as well.

This makes me happy I don't have an OBD-II car anymore. When my check engine light comes on, it means something is about to BLOW UP!!! Haha

LOL they must put some pretty defective gas caps on Mazda3's. I had to have my cap replaced too a week after I bought the car.

Well... I can't seem to diagnose the issue so I'm going to let Spradley Barr Mazda up here do it. They only want $65 and they'll check the misfire I've been experiencing as well. Hopefully everything turns out well and I don't need some serious work done to the engine. :(
