Gearbox diagram help

Postby Number2 » Wed Sep 15, 2010 9:14

Hello all,

So I'm driving home from college tonight and after coming to a stop at a red light, I'm selecting 1st gear and it feels mushy. Same with 3rd and 5th. However, 2nd, 4th, and 6th feel fine and click into place effortlessly. It feels as if something is either blocking my selection of the top gears (1,3,5), or something needs tightening or something has come loose. I wanted to see if there is a website that has (for free of course) diagrams of everything mazda (specifically speed3) (more specifically the gearbox section).

Also, any recommendations on dealers to send my precious? I bought the car at Mazda of Lakewood, but I'll take it anywhere.

Thanks

I would almost bet something came loose with your linkage.

Ditto. I did read something about that awhile ago.

Linkage...happened to me. Look at the cable where it bolts to the tranny. My guess is that it came free of that mounting point and the cable itself is "kinking" sort of. Sounds exactly like what I went thru.

Yea, it's nice and loud. Playing around with it in the garage, I was able to hear a loud clunk selecting 1,3,5.

Mazda of Lakewood is booked until Tuesday...I just tried giving Sill-Terhar a call and no one answered! Who do you guys recommend for service?

You could try McDonald. They were good to me in the past. MOL will just tell you it's the clutch (sorry, still annoyed at their service dept from stuff a coupla years ago).

DON'T go to MOL!!! I would try Sill-Terhar again. They might be hard to get a hold of, but they will take care of you!

I still think its your linkage tho.

How does Reverse feel in comparison to the other gears? Same as 1, 3, 5? or 2, 4, 6?

and let me guess, the bov caused my 'clutch' malfunction, thereby deeming my car out of warranty. :D

No, I am booked with Sill-Terhar for tomorrow. I'm going to take out the center console so that 1) No risk of scratching or damaging 2) Make the tech's job easier.

Thanks for the pdf diagram. (it's still downloading) That is awesome!

edit: Tbot, reverse is the same as 1,3,5.

Tell David I said hi for me :D (or Clark, depending on who's running the counter hehe). They're good guys for sure, and have always taken care of me. Be prepared tho to swap out your BOV real quick just in case the corporate mazda adjuster has to come out (doubt it, but be prepared).

Honestly, I'm thinking that it's a 20-30 min. fix. Depending on if they have the replacement part(s) (if needed).

I hope it is fixed tomorrow. I can't miss the show on Saturday!

If its the cables...it won't be 20-30 minutes...it'll be a long day of work.

I didn't mention this, but the problem was fixed the next day. Sil-Terhar's techs couldn't figure out the problem and would need me to return my car to stock so the master tech could look at it on the following Monday. So I took it home and with the help of a friend, I was able to EASILY spot the problem. One person shifted the gears and the other was able to look under the hood. The hammer-looking mechanism from the shifting was knocking the Cold air intake pipe (which had come loose and was sagging).

So I made a quick replacement bracket and voila, no more problem. CP-E is going to warranty me a new hangar/bracket (for a backup) and powder coat the tube which has sustained some serious scratching and damage. They can't knock out the dent, but they can make it look pretty...and that's what counts, right?

Glad to hear it was nothing and it's funny i was going to tell you to check and see if anything was blocking or hitting the counter weight. I don't know how this happened, but one day i hopped in my car, started her up and could not for the life of me engage any gear up top (R, 1, 3, 5). I was baffled and seriously concerned. I got out and opened the hood to inspect what i could see of the trans and guess what? Some how overnight my intake filter for the Cobb had fallen off and was lodged between the counterweight and frame. Same in your case, it didn't allow the shift mechanism to pull backward like it needs to. 2, 4, and 6 engaged fine since it pushes that forward.

Sorry i didn't see this thread earlier. I could have saved you some time.
