Brakes are cheaper than a clutch.

True, but a clutch (or bearings) would be under warranty. :)

Nice link, lol....literally.

I used to downshift, but for the reason dommo stated, I never do anymore.

I agree brakes are cheaper than a tranny. I wouldn't personally drive intentionally using my transmission to slow down instead of my brakes based on hoping for warranty coverage though. If I have to downshift quickly, I always make sure to double clutch and tap the gas to bring the speed of the engine and transmission together.

I agree with what others are saying. Brake pads are wicked cheap and much easier to install than clutch/transmission/engine. (The comparison is not even close).

No need to engine brake unless you are 16 and drive a civic and like the 'riiiinnng diiiininngg diinnnnnggg diiiiinnnnng' as you wind down for stop lights. :D

I get on my g/f everytime she does it.

LOL. I've always downshifted. Just the way my dad taught me. ANd yes, I rev-match whenever possible, but that's how I learned to drive a stick. He always said that if you do it right, you save on brake wear without really endangering your tranny.

The trick is doing it right... a lot of people can't match revs all that well.

any word on the squeaking? Did you inspect the brakes or the dust guard?

OK, after taking the wheels off, I think it may in fact be the brakes. Here are some closeups.

So...here are my questions. I REALLY want to go with some upgraded pads AND I want drilled and slotted rotors, but we're cash-strapped right now thanks to vet bills lately.

So I'd like to machine the current OEM rotors and just do new pads for now. Like to get something with similar or better braking than the OEM pads, with as little dust as possible. Tire of cleaning my damn wheels all the time.

So do you all think the OEM rotors can be machined, or are they replace-only? 36K miles on them.

Also, what suggestions are there for aftermarket pads?

Thanks!

Nope, not brakes. Probably just dust. I have 20% left on the fronts and more on the rears, per Just Brakes!

brakes look like they have some good life left in them. 36k miles? I'd see about having the rotors machined.
