Bob Penkhus Best Deal Again

So the tires on my wife's CX-9 are bald already. 33K miles.

In shopping for replacements, I checked Discount Tire, Tirerack.com, and Penkhus, and in the end, the dealer had the best deal. We're getting 4 Goodyear Wrangler HPs mounted, balanced, and so on for $665. Tirerack doesn't say good things about them, but Joey swears by them and says his wife is on her second set on HER CX-9, so I'll take his word for it.

Have to be better than what we have now.

No, the CX9 came with Dueller HPs. Terrible.

Well, so much for celebrating. They are OUT of Wrangler HPs. They are OUT of my second choice, the Continental CrossContact LX. Discount is OUT of both of those. And since we have snow coming Saturday night and Sunday, I need tires on the CX-9 NOW.

They offered up some Mirada tires, but uh....no. Not putting my family on no-name tires, even if they are supposedly made by Yokohama.

So we're settling for some Yokohama YK-520s. They get rated as BEST on Discount Tire's website, and are actually a little cheaper. We will see -- I have my doubts, but it's worth a shot. Gotta be better than the baldies on the truck now, but I am VERY disappointed that they didn't find out about this until the day before we were supposed to get the tires put on. :(

So you're not using the dealer, but going to Discount? I actually had the YK-520's before and didn't like them much... kind of just a bleh tire. I put some General Grabbers on my wife's SUV (Big O) and they've been a great tire. Way better than the Michelin's she had before.

No, it's still at the dealer. Discount would have had to order anything for the 9 and wouldn't get it until Monday-Tuesday.

Avoid the YK520s if you can. I had them on my Odyssey- very hard rubber compound (that 60k rating means something)- crappy on ice and snow- loud after ~10k. YMMV.

Well, they got them installed in a couple of hours, and threw in a free oil change for the sudden change in plans. I drove around on them a bit, even got it up to 70 once. Well-balanced. VERY quiet, at least so far. MUCH MUCH quieter than the stock Duellers when they were still new, so that's one improvement. We'll see how the grip is if it snows tonight!
