Obviously when we say heavy its usually the heavier of whatever lightweight wheels we're looking at. Anyway, I found this article awhile ago and figured I post it up for anyone looking at new wheels and are stuck on the decision of whether 4lbs would make a difference or not. So here you go.

Cool read but how would we go about real-world application? I would assume that buying from a tested brand would be the best way but if all else is equal between two different wheels from two different brands, how would we determine which wheel is better without having the extensive testing gear that was used in the article?

Interesting that this is bumped now...very similar article in Grassroots this month about wheels weights. I only skimmed it the other day when it showed up in the mail.

That said, it seems the extensive testing gear in the article was "Method of testing is based on impression, tire wear, data from GPS logger (speed, lateral G, etc), and temperature. Nothing terribly advanced. Choosing between similar spec'd wheels of different brands would seem to come down to preference, at that point.

I really need to renew my GRM subscription and my SCCA membership. Both are top notch publications.

to end it, the optima street challenge winner in 2013 was a........1965 Corvette with 315/30/18 on 18x12's. yes another stretched tire on a 50 yr old car beats everyone, skylines, newer vette's, etc, etc.

Wide wheels with stretched tires = the win.

Good stuff. Hence why I bought some 15x9s which are relatively light (12.2lbs) and have a 550kg load rating. Now I just need some 225/45/15 RS3 or Rivals to throw on.... or should just do the NT01s in that size?

Well crap, now I hate my 275 tires on 9" wheels. They're talking about 245s for 9.5". Oh well, tires are too expensive to be replacing them before they need it. Maybe I'll go with a narrower tire next time I need new ones, which could be a while since I drive the Mustang about 2500 miles a year now.

Crap that's light... what did you get? And I thought the Momo Podiums were light at 13.4lbs for the 15x7 wheels.

finally replying even after you bought rivals.

Anything in the extreme tire category is what I would go with.

ZII, R1R, RS3, RE-11, XS, AD08R, Rival, etc.

I bought the same Advati's Strom S1, on 15X7. Only 10.2 lbs! PM or post here if you'd like to see how they look on an NA.
