We do get spam now and again but it is deleted before anyone else can see it.

This. Since posts have to be approved, nobody other than mods see spam. That's also the reason PMs are turned off for new members, as we've had PM spam problems in the past as well.

Chris and I are realistically the only active moderators on the site. We do our best to keep up with new registrations and actively promote new users when they are verified as non-spam.

Thanks Chris!

Is there anyway we can change the number of posts required to become a full member? You and Tim do a terrific job keeping up with the new members getting approved and made full members, but i still think we can drop the number down a bit. Ten is a lot if we don't happen to see them. I can see how it's discouraging for new members when we don't quite see their new posts quickly, or at all.

We're more likely to see 10 posts that need approval than 1.

I'll stick with the already arbitrarily chosen number of 10.

How about instead of moderating posts, you moderate new members? It's easy to spot spammers when they sign up. Even easier if you add custom registration fields. I have location and car. Works good for me.

We tried that in the past and it didn't work as well.

For me, the only downside is that my new members don't get immediate access for posting on the forum. But to keep spammers off the board, it's a small price to pay.

It's getting pretty bad lately. I'll have to weed through up to 20 new accounts a day to see if any of them are legit. It's usually easy to tell by the gibberish usernames these spammers pick.
