For the back end servers/clusters and number crunching stuff yeah...plus they're using iphones to communicate with hellfire missile systems to provide target information and actually launch them.

tbot wrote:Ok first off, Apple IS bigger than Microsoft as a company. Second most of the information in the world isn't on windows...or osx for that matter, its all on linux systems. The reason why, stability, customization, and security. Yes virus' can be written for linux, unix (which is what osx uses) but it's more difficult to do so than a dos based windows box.

Also, why is the DOD, Air Force, and a few other military branches all switching over to mac's??? They're doing it for a reason, and mostly because security and the end user capabilities.

And if you were competing with something that most of the world uses now, wouldn't you give your product the means to emulate whatever that was to show that your product is just as good if not better. It makes sense what apple is doing, and also is showing it as well in EVERY market.

If you look at the enterprise market, apple is taking over, its surpassed RIM, windows mobile, android (yes thats the iPhone) but at the same time, more and more people are migrating to macs than staying with windows. Apple's growth rate has been around 18% for the past decade vs all other manufacturers which have been at most 6-8%. So you tell me whats actually going on...everything points to Apple growing faster than anyone can do anything about it.

K gotta chime in here as an 11 year IT professional. Umm...lets start with Apple being bigger than Microsoft....NO! Microsoft has their OS on ANY private or business personal computer system sold in the free world. Apple has theirs on one...it's own. Market share for Apple began to rise with the release of Windows Vista. When people were faced with the option of buying a computer with a "horror story" OS or this "new" Mac system people bought Mac. Now that Windows 7 is out they are once again losing that portion of market share due to people wanting to go back to an operating system that allows them the flexabilty they require...not gettin that on a Mac unless you have Windows on it. Which is another point all in itself. If you're so superior to Windows...why even allow dual boot to Windows? Oh yeah cause you NEEEEEED Windows. It's like taking the rotory out of an RX-7 and dropping in an LS. I like the prettyness but want something that can do what I need it to do. (Sorry 7 guys butcha know it's true!)

Only thing I'll say about the virus issue is this. Windows has been the dominant OS since Windows 98. That's 12 years worth of hacking and code writing. Of course there's gonna be more than on a Mac. Nobody was writing code for them and most code is reused and modified for each itteration of OS. Don't worry Mac folks..your's is coming soon.

Now on to Government switching to Mac. I'm a Network Engineere on Fort Carson, yup I'm a government contractor, and NO we nor are any of the branches of service switching to Mac. We are actually in the testing phase required before releasing 7 onto out systems. There are many factors to why we don't use Mac but I won't get into it. I'll just say that statement is not true.

Phones: Apple hasn't surpassed RIM..no one has. RIM still holds 31% of all smartphone market share. Apple is actually slipping in growth rate to the Anroid. Two quarters ago, prior to the iphone 4 release, Anroid sold 27% to Apple's 23 percent of all smart phone sales. That means Android outsold iphone. Why? Versatility. Android can/is sold on multiple platforms and carriers. iphone OS...well the name says it all huh...and ur stuck with AT&T.

THE IPOD IS GREAT THOUGH!

Apple will do just what they did about 10 years ago. Keep themselves SO friggen exclusive to themselves that they'll slip back into the niche market they were in before.

As a company, apple is second in size only to exxon atm...and market share in the enterprise world I believe apple is ahead even of RIM.

and take a look:

Again wrong....we use Windows Server 2008. As most of the world is starting to do.
I had no clue we were gonna start using iphones, which the gov has a contract with blackberry since we have their email servers on our bases, to fire missles from helicopters. The hellfire is an Air-to-Ground missle system fired from a helicopter. It's a tank buster and targeting info comes from the pilot of the chopper. I know they have talked about putting them on UAV but then again the pilot of the UAV would be the targeting system.

I think we're using the word "enterprise" in a different context. You're using it for smart phones, whereas us IT folks are talking "large computer infrastructure", for lack of a better term. Apple will NEVER be prevalant in the latter. It's simply not their intended market. Apple does not have enterprise-class server based applications.

That said, even if Apple is growing in smartphone applications in secure environments, it's pretty dumb of whatever company is using them. The phones get so locked down that the main reason to get one is made irrelevant.

As far as "largest companies", Apple is nowhere close. Top 100, but not even in the top 50. I'm sure oil and banking dominate the top 10, quite possibly top 20 (the other spots rounded out by telecoms).

Regardless, Apple makes cool/trendy products that are stylish and I'm sure functional. My wife has had her 1st gen iphone since they came out.

Apple is second in market share capitalization, not in size.

Market capitalization is a popular metric for assessing the size of a company as a representation of the investing public's notion of the company's worth. The figure is derived by simply multiplying the number of outstanding shares of the company's stock by the share price.

n the case of Apple, slightly over 900 million shares outstanding times over $250 per share yields a market capitalization of about $228 billion. Microsoft, meanwhile, has a share price of only slightly over $26.00 but over 8.75 billion shares outstanding, giving it a nearly equal market capitalization to Apple.

And when they get as large as Microsft they'll split shares like Microsoft has had to do numerous times and that price will go back down. And don't put to much into that number. Prior to the release of the iphone 4 their share value was consistent at 198 per share. Once the earnings report comes out from this quarter, when they don't have near as many iphone sales, is reported the per share price will go back down.

they just had their quarter financial announcement and the shares went up to almost 320 per share...and fell back down to around 311. Apple is just going up. They've split shares once already and I believe are now going along with what google has, and just letting the number rise and rise instead of splitting (which they did the last time when it went over 200 per share i believe.

Yes that was the quater that contained the release of the iphone. Jobs said that Apple's profit was up 70% from phone sales. Don't expect to see those numbers or share value in this quarter.

900 million shares to 8.75 billion shares is just not a good comparison.

Basically, Apple is a TOY company that makes cool trendy stuff that's good for dicking around and Widows are more real world use and business oriented and also good for gaming if you're into that.

Don't get me wrong, I have iPhones, I love them and they are great... It's the best phone out there right now IMO... But it's just a TOY. I'm waiting to see what Windows Phone 7 can do... as I can develop my own software on it with the same code that we're using right now on PC. I'll let my co-worker get it so we all can develop against it.
