W210 heater blower

Postby Dwduc » Sun Dec 28, 2014 9:14

Leaving town Friday to go visit family for the weekend the heater fan in the Mercedes quit working. So I had the girlfriend drive while I troubleshoot. Got access to the fan and powered it directly (sitting upside down in the passenger seat with my head under the dash). Fan doesn't spin at all. Removed the fan assembly and disassembled in my lap, found one brush worn so far that it came out of the holder. Called all the parts stores on our route and none were in stock. Arrived at our destination half frozen. Found an old Chrysler starter in my dad's garage and tore it apart to find 4 large brushes! Took about 15 minutes each on the grinder to make 2 brushes to fit the Bosch heater fan motor. Smashed all the parts back together with the new MacGyver brushes and it works!! Kinda noisy for the first few minutes till the brushes wore into the new shape. Going good for a zero dollar fix. Excited to see how long it lasts.

Nice work! The BMW is going in on Friday for a noisy fan. Yippee for warranty.

Yeah was alot easier to get upside down then it was to get back right. Thought I was going to ask her to pull over so I could fall out the door and get back in.
