Yeah it's heavy... yeah, it's an auto... I would still rock one. With pro drivers, I bet the Z06 would be faster on a road course, however I'm not a pro... I bet with amateur drivers the GT-R would be faster, due to it's uber-smart drivetrain lol. It also has 4 seats opposed to 2.... and is AWD, so I can drive it in the snow if need be, whereas I wouldn't want to be stuck driving a Z06 in the snow... Actually, due to it being turbocharged, I bet at this altitude, the GT-R would even be faster overall, due to the NA Z06 losing considerably more power, especially considering Nissan programmed the GT-R to increase boost pressure as altitude rises to avoid losing power.
4 seats. AWD. Massive turbo power. I'm in. Anyone here ever drove a DSG? I have... I don't like autos... I like the DSG. I always said, the ONLY auto I would EVER consider was a DSG, if Nissan's auto is anything like that, I wouldn't really have a problem, as it shifts faster and more accurately than a manual can ever shift. It completes perfect rev matched downshifts, and even has a built in launch control... yeah it's an auto, but everything I love so much about manuals, it still does. You can control your shifts... like a manual... it's shifts quickly when you want it to... like a manual... it can rev match... like a manual... it will hold your revs without shifting while cornering... like a manual... you can actually launch the car hard without the use of an irritating stall converter... like a manual... so yeah, it's an auto, but it's a damn good one.
I'm sure I would miss the feel of a clutch and gear-shift, but performance wise, I'm confident it's just as good, if not superior to any manual on earth. So, I would be fine with it.
Yes, it's also heavy... so are most Lamborghini's... on a tight autoX, probably not the greatest choice car, but I bet it's outstanding on a full road course, with longer straights, sweepers, ect. Honestly though, what I'm really waiting to see, is the lightened, more track oriented Spec V they're working on... if they can shave 300-400 lbs worth of excess curb weight, or maybe offer a full manual, that would be even better. I guess only time will tell.

I agree with you Brandon that it does all the same things as a manual, but to not be able to slam a gear home and get that awesome feeling of that perfect shift would kill me. The rev match down shifts that the GT-R does for you is preety cool, it sounds great, but thats about the only thing i like about the DSG type gear box in the GR-R.

I think it makes sense to use the DSG. When your goal is building the ultimate performance machine, why use a gear box that is going to shift slower and decrease performance?
After seeing a few comparos and track videos on the GT-R I have a hard time faulting anything they have done with it so far. I love the experience of driving a manual but after seeing the insane launch mode that thing has and how quickly it can move through the gears I don't think I would mind driving one.

I guess I am the only one who thinks the GT-Rs looks don't match its performance. I really don't like the styling at all, and if given the choice I would pick the Z06 over the GT-R 9 times out of 10. If I had that kind of coin I could buy a beater winter car, since I wouldn't want to expose either one of those cars to the nasty colorado winter, more so the gravel on the roads.
The cars were dead even in the camparison, that tells me that the Z06 is still a faster car, maybe not at altitude. The lightning quick shifts of the GT-R compared to the slow, regular manual, shifts of the Z06 is the big difference I see, otherwise the Z06 would probably have beat the GT-R by roughly half a second.
Besides the Z06 just looks mean as hell and is one of the few true US made cars I would buy.
It doesn't hurt that I have a hard on for vettes either.

And I don't know if anyone noticed (no one commented on it), but the Z06 was actually quicker to 100 than the GT-R. The GT-R only won the 0-100-0 test because the test driver could hover his left foot over the brake pedal. Why couldn't he do that with the Z06? Hover your left foot over the left side of the brake pedal, hit the brakes, bring your right foot over to apply pressure so your left foot can move over to the clutch to take it out of gear before the engine stalls.
I too think the GT-R was flogged relentlessly by the designers with the Ugly Stick.

I see the GT-R and I do one thing, yawn. I guess it's cool that there's another performance option out there, but you'd think with the hype that Nissan just invented the entire performance niche. I dunno, the GT-R, I wouldn't be mad if someone dropped one off at my door step, but I wouldn't go spend my own money on one, even if I had the means to do so.

There's no doubt in my mind, in a straight line, the Z06 is faster. It has a far superior power/weight ratio. At sea level, from a roll, there's no question in my mind, the Z06 would walk away with ease. It's supposedly 500 lbs lighter, and makes over an extra 30 horsepower.
I agree with Tom, in that the transmission definitely helped the GT-R, well, that and more importantly, the fact that the GT-R is AWD, which helps as power levels go up, as I'm sure a 3200 lbs car with 500 ft-lb of torque & RWD (Z06) would have a bit of a problem putting all the power down, at least on street tires. Sadly enough, from a roll, an STI & SRT-4 are usually just about dead even (effing underrated turbo Neons lol), due to the Neon being underrated (they actually have 260-270bhp) having a smaller drivetrain loss (FWD vs AWD) and the Neon weighing less (2800 lbs vs 3200 lbs)... but, due to the STI's AWD launch, most publications usually clock the STI as running the 1/4 mile about .5 seconds or more faster.
The GT-R is the same way, it only runs the same 0-60 time as the Z06 because of AWD launch, and cheater ass launch control lol. I won't lie though, I think launch control is pretty cool lol, even in DSG powered FWD Jetta/GTI's. I saw I believe a Best Motoring International, where they put a DSG GTI w/launch control up against a car of similar power, and the GTI smoked it... then they put it up against a car with like 20hp more... and the GTI smoked it... eventually, they put it up against a car with around 50hp more, and they ran an almost identical 1/4 mile time, it was pretty cool.

Well one thing that has been overlooked greatly IMO is the lengths Nissan went to to make this car "untuneable." Honestly I think the biggest thing that performance cars over is the ability to make them perform better yet it's been taken away. I know that there will be ways around it but that'll just drive the cost of mods up. That is honestly what drives me away from this car so much. Why do companys drive away the fan base that saved them ie Subaru?

I hear ya. Although Nissan is crazy if they thing people won't figure out how to tune the GT-R lol.
As far as Subaru goes, the bland styling and lack of hardcore edge took away from their former target audience, but they in no way tried to make them difficult to tune lol. Within a month of the new STI being released there were already engine management systems available lol. Cobb already has an AP for them, and TurboXS already adapted a UTEC to work on them lol.

I doubt Subies will ever be hard to tune lol but the styling was exactly my point. It's just like taking the rotary out of the RX-8
