I grew up in upstate NY too, and my dad taught me from an early age (as we drove around in his F-150 with a snowplow) that "there are some days you shouldn't be out without 4WD." Sure, this winter there were only 4-5 days with enough snow on the ground to give a RWD car a fit. And sure you could get out in them, especially with snow tires on.
But the AWD makes it more likely you'll get to your destination safely and with less stress than if you're driving a RWD car in the snow. The only time I've gotten stuck in the snow was in my old 6, when it bottomed out in the snow last year, so ground clearance still plays a huge role, but so do tires.
Anyway, "need" is personal. I need either FWD or AWD to feel like I should be out in the snow. Especially if I'm on all-season tires. That whole rear-end swing thing that makes it fun to drive on dry pavement makes it TERRIBLE in snow or ice, IMHO. I prefer not to slide at all if I can avoid it.
And in my old Explorer -- it was a 1991, so it was either RWD or 4WD. None of the automatic stuff they have now. So I ALWAYS locked it into 4WD in the snow. And it still sucked.

Huzer, I guaranty you that your car will not make it in the high country if you drive it on a daily basis. Try driving Loveland pass everyday, you will get stuck sooner or later. The road conditions in the Front Range area are however much more different than the mountains. Driving in the Denver area with RWD and a good set of winter tires is usually not a problem although it can be a little bit more stressful than with a FWD or AWD car.

Oh, if I lived in the mountains, I know the RX8 would not work. There are extremes for every situation, and I'm not lauding the RX8's all weather skills. For where I currently live, however, I don't need an AWD or 4WD vehicle. Whatever floats anyone's boat is fine with me. If people think they must have AWD or whatever to get around, good for them. I guess I'm just old school. Overall, I prefer RWD.
The point of the discussion wasn't supposed to be just focused on winter conditions. Geez. I do know that the RWD vehicle I currently own is not the best winter car out there, nor is it a practical vehicle. For my situation, it does work, however.

I drove a Mustang GT through Snowqualmie Pass in a crazy snow storm. I had studded Gislaveds and 150 lbs of sand. I was the only car moving that I could see. There were even cops in the ditch!
