anyone know where to get glass replaced?

Postby Chris Barnett » Sun Jan 04, 2009 9:14

Tonight my rear window on my 08 speed 3 shattered when I shut the hatch. Seriously. I shut it softly too.

I haven't really searched very long online but windshields.com has these prices:

Speedy Glass is $391.63

Novus Auto Glass is $460.29

Elite/Safelite is $296.95

Anyone know where I can get a better deal? I really don't want to spend $300 on something that shouldn't of just randomly shattered.

What!? It shattered when you closed it? Wow, watch it Chris you know you need to control your super human strength. Elite/Safelite was the first to come to mind. I wonder if you could get your insurance to pay for it.

Yeah it literally just shattered and I wasn't even slamming it.

To make matters worse my neighbor backed into to the left rear door/quarter panel on new years when I was out of town. Thankfully they told my housesitter.

Literally just a few small dents and scratches but the quote to repair is $2000. Fortunately that will get covered by them. The window, I'm on my own. My insurance only covers windshields without a deductible.

Ouch on both counts! Your neighbor might be as much of an idiot as the kid who rammed me. Its a long shot, but i wonder if Mazda would be willing to pay for some of the costs? Its something that should never break like that during a normal use situation.

I wonder if the collision played a part in the glass shattering.

I doubt it did, the dents literally are on the door and a couple inches on the quarter panel.

It just looks like the lady tapped me, but what do I know I wasn't here.

I always go to a place called Glass Experts. They don't charge a lot and they have always done great work for me in the past. I brought them my classic cars (63 nova SS, 65 Impala SS and 69 Barracuda Formula S 4 Speed 340) and they had all the windsheilds in stock and I had the cars back the same day and I usually only waited in the waiting room for like 45-60 minutes. If you take Alameda West off of Santa Fe they are about 3 lights down on the north side (1/2 way down before you hit Federal). You can't miss it and like I said I've had good luck with them. Great prices and good work!

I was thinking the exact same thing. It's not really that far fetched to think that. Chris, you might talk to your neighbor about this. Chances are they're paying the same deductible whether the glass was broken or not. Seems too coincidental to not be related.

I bet anything if you went to a Mazda service bay and told them your glass shattered for no reason, then told them a few days before your neighbor bumped your car, chances are they would say the collision was the cause of the glass breakage. They would be saying to mostly to put blame elsewhere, but you can use that to your advantage to get your neighbor's insurance to cover it.

That's the damage from the lady backing into me. There is no way someone could look at that and tell me with a straight face it is in any way related to my hatch window exploding when it shut.

The damage is hard to see, but there is a nice dent running from the back of the molding about 1 foot straight up. Some little ones from there to the door edge, two at the edge of the door running horizontal, and on vertical dent right at the top of the wheel wheel/fender flare. There is also a dent where it is pushed out right in front of where this photo was taken.

My neighbor found a new rear window in a junk yard.

OK OK you win. I was just trying to help your cause. BUT...even though the damage there is minimal, maybe some sort of crazy shockwaves and vibrations went up into the glass, deteriorating the rigidity of it and all it took was a little shake up to make it shatter. LOL.

The problem is the side and rear windows are tempered glass. A shockwave could not have broken the glass. it would have to be a sharp object that would cause it. you could slap the window with your hand and not break it.

Did you have any thing it the back of the car that was sharp? Or maybe check around the gasket and see it there is anything sharp there. with sonething sharp it would only have to take a tap to break it.
