Will Mazdaspeedforums.org Survive

Postby Stealth01 » Fri Nov 05, 2010 9:14

For those that missed it, MSF.org has had some serious problems lately. They were hacked by a turkish hacker group, leaving the site offline for 12-14 hours. Then, when they tried to migrate to a new server, they suffered a "catastrophic hardware failure" that dumped two months worth of posts and zeroed out a lot of who had donated money to the site. That was MOnday, I think? The site hasn't been consistently up since the crash. When it came up, it went right back down because of a database problem. Now it's back offline again, today. I get a database error screen now.

I've been involved in running a couple of websites, and my experience is that when something like this happens, it is often the death of the site. People lose faith in its ability to be there when they need information, donations dry up, operating costs become crippling, and the site shuts down.

That said, I hope msf survives. It's juvenile and stupid a lot of the time, and there are some real AHOLES on there. But there are also some of the smartest Mazdaspeed people in the community on there. They've helped MANY folks fix their cars, solve minor problems, and find other enthusiasts.

I think it'll survive, but this is starting to get old fast.

I haven't been frequenting it as much since it crashed but I think there's a strong enough following that it will be alright in time.

I know on mazda3forums, we've crashed quite a few times, and we've survived over the years.
