Genetic Atlantic Salmon

Postby AIM WO4 » Mon Sep 20, 2010 9:14

Did you hear about the new genetically engineered salmon that will grow twice as fast?

I say, "Bring 'em on! Lets alter the Pacific salmon so that it can eat bears and grow large enough in numbers as to extinguish all other life in its path! Oh wait... That's called a human."

Good thread, ha ha.

I saw that as well. I personally will opt for the real thing-- to each their own though.

I'm not surprised, GMO Corn and Soy went through the same thing - they exploited the loophole that lets them put it on the market with nearly no testing. I'm surprised Monsanto isn't behind this one too, and hasn't copyrighted it yet.

"If approval does go through, the first genetically modified salmon could begin entering U.S. supermarkets within about two years, upon which the FDA will be relying on market surveillance measures similar to those currently being used by the egg and beef industry to assess post-market health implications..."

...which means we become guinea pigs, label or not. Screw rigorous scientific testing before we allow it on the market, lets just put it out there and see if it hurts people, then we can pull it back. What the hell do we have an FDA and USDA for if they're going to experiment with the general population? This, aside the other problems with the FDA and its behavior with IRBs and clinical drug research..
