Almost blew up my motor

Postby eliminster » Tue Nov 29, 2011 9:14

So Saturday i was driving home from work and went to get onto powers like i normally do as fast as hell so i don't get rear ended when I noticed my tires were spinning like crazy. I looked at the boost gauge and it was at 25psi and climbing, I immediately let off the gas and drove grandma-ish home. It was dark so didn't try and figure it out till yesterday when I had some free time after class and noticed that my hose to the waste-gate from my boost controller was melted to the exhaust pipe, evidently one of my zip ties had broken that was holding it away and it decided it wanted to become burning plastic. I picked up a new one today but will try to post pics of the melted hose once I can find my camera. That really scared the shit out of me though cause I don't have the money to rebuild cosmo motor in the 7 again.

I had a friend who lost a motor that exact way (W/G reference hose melting) so you are indeed lucky.

Do you not have an overboost fuel or ignition cut setup within your Microtech?

I haven't set it up since i was running a manual boost controller and thought the system was reliable, just didn't think a ziptie would break causing the hose to come in contact with the exhaust, but i got it fixed and ziptied the shit out of it.

Even with a manual (or electric) form of boost control the fuel or ignition cut will still work since the Microtech has it's own MAP sensor. So at a preset level of boost it will either cut fuel or ignition, saving your engine.

Both will get it done, but either type depends on what your EMS can do. The PowerFC only does a fuel cut, for instance, whereas the AEM has a choice of either fuel or ignition.
