Check out ebay for toner refills. MF4450 (model number) + toner refill.

Doesn't seem to be much cheaper than OEM inkjet cartridges, at least for black, and it's quite a bit more expensive than refilled cartridges. And you can't print in color. If you're buying it to make copies, I'd think you'd want to have the copy be in color also. Plus I do almost as much printing in color as I do in black and white, but tut's usage may be different.

Regarding my usage: The ability to print in color would be a plus. But I would primarily be printing in black and white. More so, I need the unit (unit, ha ha) for its scanning and faxing capabilities.

$0.003376 per page. That's 0.3 cent per page. I don't think inkjet can do that.

I've never needed to print in color at home. I just need to print things for information or documentation, it doesn't need to look pretty with colors. I guess if you need to look pretty, then you can. But good luck buying all those color cartridges... it will cost more than what you paid for the printer. You can try looking up cartridges for the inkjet printers that you're looking at and see how much it cost and how much it will cost per page.

If you want to print pictures, you would not want to print with INKJET anyway. It will fade. Get it professionally done at the store so your pictures will last.
You'll have to buy photo paper + cost of ink... not really saving much at all...

I guess it all depends what you want to use it for and how much you're willing to spend in the long run.

Oh, I've tried to refill the ink cartridges in the past... never went well. I've also tried re-manufactured cartridges... the quality is not the same. So, it was not worth it at all to me.

With toner, you just pop the cap open, pour the new toner in with the funnel provided, close the cap, done. Good for another 2,500 pages.

Perhaps a bit of hyperbole here. Color cartridges are definitely not more than the cost of the printer. Does printing in color cost more than printing in black and white? Absolutely. But the cost per page is still minimal and unless you're printing hundreds of pages a month or something, I don't think you have to min/max it to the point of figuring cost per page.

I don't print photos on printers. Like you said, you're better off going to a store to get real photo printouts for stuff like that. But since I have at least one Internet capable digital device with me at all times, I don't know that I'll ever need a physical copy of a picture again anyway, but that's another discussion.

And I agree with you about the refills sucking. I've never tried to refill them myself, but the refurb ones I've bought online haven't worked out and the extra hassle and poor print quality wasn't worth the few dollars saved. Others in the thread have had a different experience though.

I'll let my extreme nerdiness show a little and show what kind of stuff I print out in color...

When I'm building a new Magic deck, I will print out the cards I don't have so I can experiment with them before spending the money on the real cards.

Haha, Nice picture!

I just did a quick looksie for one of the inkjet printer link that tut posted... the just Black cartridge cost $7.95 on ebay that only yield 180 pages, that's $0.04416 or 4.4 cent per page.

That's 13x (or 1300%) the cost of toner with just black alone...

With the economy these days... every little bit counts... especially in the long run.

Especially with they way my wife print stuff... she prints everything, even stuff that she doesn't need. I'll walk by the printer and see a stack of printed paper on it. Then I ask her if she need any of them... then she said "NO".
She has an iPhone4 with TomTom installed on it but she prints GoogleMaps directions out.

that grinds my gears!!! no faster way to use up cartridges than to print useless stuff... i only print ad-proofs, and 99% i do in grayscale so i don't use up any color...

lol good thing I use Laser. My toner refill is actually cheaper and yields more than the sample I posted above. My prints are cost about $0.0019 per page, a little less than 0.2 cent per page (5 pages for a penny). It just bugs me that I have to keep buying more paper to load up the printer. lol

^ +1

I love my Samsung laser printer. I'm still on my first replacement toner, which I remember costing around $28.00, shipped. It's done a crazy number of crisp B&W printouts. Probably nearly 1000+. Just keep it clean.

I bought it from Office Max years ago for $330, with a $300 mail-in rebate. (no typo) Definitely my favorite peripheral, with maybe the acception of my Cobb.

wow now that makes me want to get that. I've been thinking about getting a laser printer. We have a good working all in one so we don't need color or a scanner.
