Thanks guys.
Nate: I guess in so many words, I plan to continue to use it, make my payments, and soft sell it along the way. Despite the calamity, I still think it's a highly desirable car and my guess is that having a brand new engine can't be anything other than a selling point. Then again, that might just be the glass-half-full in me. (?)
Wanted: Shop suggestion

Sounds like a good enough plan to me. I will say this- my brother had a similar incident (passat oil sludge...engine blew). He traded it in not long after having the engine replaced. Not a day later it dawned on him, that (like you) he still had a desirable AWD car. Choosing the optimist's route, he went back to the dealer and reclaimed his whip. He still has it to this day and the car has proven to be solid.
That being said, an ms6 > passat (imo). I don't see many and they still turn my head. Like I always say, if you can't enjoy a car in stock form, it's not the right car. But having a stocky and enjoying it, I don't think (?) you'll have that problem. Either way, best of luck with things- just wanted to chime in.

I decided to do a quick "drive-by" at Groove, and cruise past the service bays to see how things are shaping up. To my surprise/delight, the car was pulled out of the garage and looked just as good as I remember. I'm not going to say the love affair it back on, but seeing it reminded me a bit just how much I like that car!

So the car got returned to me today, but I had to take it right back because I'm experiencing an overboost problem. They gave it back this way because of my Synapse being installed and because w/out the stock BPV being on, their Mazda computer was getting skewed numbers. I dunno if they'll have to order me a new OEM bypass valve, but if so, I figure I'm better off them detonating the new engine, than me doing it and then Mazda claiming no-warranty, because I accepted the car back like this. Oh well.

Nope, no accessories. Just the actual hard parts of the engine from valve-cover down to the oil pan.
The major items that additionally got reused, were the turbo and the intake manifold.

I see. Good info to know. Perhaps its my own naivety then? I've never done an engine swap. I suppose I'm disappointed in the dealership and projecting. I mean (from a sales perspective) why wouldn't they just say, "Hey, Brandon- here's the deal. We can replace the primary engine components for 'x' amount, or we can replace everything to OEM spec, for 'x'+ amount."
I don't mean to sound so dramatic, but I guess I'm just a bit clueless as to how this all works:confused: I always thought the turbo was an integral part of the MS powerplant? Also, something like an OEM bpv seems so trivial in the scope of what was just completed...to leave it out seems lackadaisical.

Yeah, this whole thing is a slippery slope, but the fact that they're still "working with me" is something I need to protect. I think we'll get down to brass tax here soon, once they get a stock BPV installed and can continue to analyze. My money is on a failing wastegate.

So the source of the blown engine now seems to be known...
After getting the stock BPV in place, my mechanic was able to continue troubleshooting the overboost condition. The problem turns out to be that I have a failure inside the turbo housing itself.
Obviously I do not have any intimate knowledge of turbochargers, but apparently there is a channel or ducting that feeds air to the wastegate as required. In my turbo however, this duct is plugged and is not able to feed the air to be expelled. The WG itself pressure-tested fine, but because the turbo can't properly "bleed it off", it's causing the overboost. The mechanic is pretty positive that this problem is what led to the blown engine.
Despite his best efforts and a couple of hours worth of trying, he's not able to clear that channel in the turbo and expel whatever the blockage is. He thinks that maybe some metal made its way in there and seized up. Long-story-short, I need to get a new turbo.
Brand new part from Mazda (with labor) and the 12/12000 warranty, is $2300.00.
Sigh....

I think I'm about 85% decided on just skipping the OEM turbo and getting one from BNR Supercars. I've juggled some numbers around and it seems that it will be less expensive to go big turbo and have Groove do the install, than the alternative.
The downside of course is that my warranty on my new engine is will now be fully voided, but what's the point of paying more for an inferior piece (?). It's only going to be a 12 month gig anyway, so on the off chance that I keep this car, I figure I'll be in better stead. Last but not least.... get a pro tune and cross my fingers!

Car is back as of this afternoon. I'll be giving it several days of once-over, but so far, so good.

Sounds good Metha, but only if you bring a manual boost gauge! My AP appears to be reading my boost levels properly, even as I switch between maps, but when the car was given back to me from Groove, my Tech. told me that he was seeing 24psi at WOT (which I am not).
I just don't know how - or with what tool - he was getting these figures, so I'm trying to figure out the discrepancy , and make sure my AP isn't misleading me to another engine slaughter.
