Mysterious Moisture

Postby whobeyou » Mon Sep 30, 2013 9:14

Hey Guys,

I've just noticed this after all the freaking flooding. My area wasn't hit hard at all by the floods. No standing water or anything, so I know that the floods are not what's causing this issue.

Whenever I leave my car sit for a night, there is a LOT of moisture on the inside. During the rains and stuff it got really bad, but now it's just consistently foggy when I get in my car in the morning.

I vacuumed out my car last weekend and I found mold/wetness under my floor mats. They are the rubber ones that came with the car. So I vacuumed THE SHIT out of my car. Nothing left untouched.

Next couple days I come out, there's more moisture under the mats, and it's still foggy. I've checked all door seals/window seals, and they are fine. I've gone through puddles to see if it was leaking from the floor, and it looks good. I'm stumped here and hate getting into a smelly/foggy car. Let me know what you guys think.

I tried Google and this is what I found...

Could be condensation from the air conditioner. This normally drains out a tube near the glove box, onto the ground. If this drain tube comes off or is clogged, the water will drain into the interior of the car instead.
Could also be a leak around the windshield, door, or sunroof.

also...

There are drain holes in the bottom of your door. They can over time get filled with crap. You might take a look at the bottom of your door and see if there is anything in the hole that is clogging it up

and...

My 3 had that problem too, i called the mobil fish tank, i think u were able to keep a fish alive for a couples of days. My solution was to use an air compressor with one of those blower kind of tip and blow some air in both drain, u have to lift the little cover and then blow some air ro clean the drain, then park ur car in a incline road, or even a ramp and u will see water coming out.

I've heard of this from a leaking heater core. I would expect the smell of coolant tho. There has been a lot of humidity lately. When the car gets cold the moisture can condense inside the car. Being colorado, this doesnt happen too much.. but on the east coast its practically raining in side cars some mornings.

With a helper, run a garden hose over all the windows and doors and look for leaks. You may have a very small, slow leak somewhere. Could be around the windshield or tailgate seals as well, although that's unlikely given the age of your car. Has the windshield ever been replaced?

+1 on any of the 3 suggestions...

seal leak, drain tube leak, or plugged drain (unlikely on newer car already). Are you still in the bumper-to-bumper warranty period?

maybe also get a small tub of desiccant and keep it open in your trunk,

Thanks for the suggestions guys!!! I've put a desiccant pack underneath the front passenger seat and this has helped but not solve it. I am going to see if I'm leaking anywhere with the garden hose this weekend.

The Windshield has never been replaced, but the curious thing is, I just had my DASH replaced. Before the dash replacement, I had no problems (that I knew of). But Colorado just got hit with a tidal wave, so I don't know if they are related.

The moisture is only found on the bottom of the mats. So I'm thinking that it's either the AC/Heater Core, or a leak in the door drain. I will check both of those out this weekend and let you know what's up.

Yes I'm still in the Bumper to Bumper warranty period. If need be, I'll just have them fix it.

If you're still bumper to bumper, I wouldn't mess around with it. Just take it to Mazda and let them deal with it.
