Yeah but it's a GM.............. Tommy no likey GM.
John Heinrescy (top dog of GM High Performance Division) races a Cobalt in SCCA club racing in Showroom Stock C. His is an SS- BUT, it's not SC or TC. They braned a NA version the SS as well. I've seen him race it back in Kansas at the Run Offs in 2006. He's a dick and almost took out the front runners in the first corner with a dive bomb inside move. I think he won SSC in 2007.

I will take my $20 and spend it on a car with a much nicer interior and all around appearance thank you very much.

pushing it, as in because it won't start?
j/k
It will be on a lift getting repairs more than it will be on the road. The ONLY Chevy I'd be caught owning is a Z06, and that's still pushing it.[/b]

ROFL @ Guido!!
Me personally, I would rather buy a Speed3, mostly because it seems more usable, as it has 4 doors, and more usable space... plus, I do prefer the looks & interior of the Speed3.
Although, I think the SS is going to be easier to make faster, mostly due to the fact they stuck with port injection, and a motor that has a decent aftermarket when it comes to beefing up the motor, to include pistons, rods, cams and I would bet if you look in GM's parts bin, you would probably find a better flowing head. That and, unless my eyes deceive me, behind the grill of the SS, it kind of looks like a FMIC..... to me, FMIC>TMIC. My STI has a TMIC obviously, but it's pretty large, and has a huge scoop above it, as well as an intercooler water sprayer to help keep it cool, so it doesn't really seem to suffer from heatsoak, or at least not as bad as the stock intercooler on my former WRX, and neither of which suffer 1/10th as bad as my Speed6 did.... that's one thing I HATED about my Speed6, heatsoak combined with a touchy ECU, made the car feel like a completely different car, sometimes it felt pretty quick, while others, it would feel completely ball-less... I could swear on hot days, in traffic, the Speed6 felt like it lost 50hp, whereas my STI NEVER suffers nearly as bad, I'm yet to actually notice one instance of heatsoak.
Basically, I'm betting that overall, if they're both very close rivals in cool weather, I'm betting in daily driving during the summer, the SS is going to be a lot more consistent. It's also going to be easier/cheaper to replace injectors, fuel pump, ect, which is another reason why I believe it will be cheaper to get power out of... although the DI, higher compression, and extra displacement of the Speed3 should more than tip things in it's favor after fuel has been addressed.
Either way, it's good another car is such a close competitor... in '02, when Subaru launched the 227hp WRX, it changed the market, it raised that bar... no longer were 160-170hp cars like the Civic Si, MSP, Focus SVT & Tiburon going to be enough to compete in the segment... the next year, Dodge launched the SRT-4 with a "claimed" 215hp (215hp my ass lol, try at least 250hp), and was able to keep it with, if not completely smoke a V8 Mustang GT (pre-2005)... then Dodge upped the rating to 230hp, during the same time when Mitsu decided they would release a 274hp EVO... so Subaru had to launch a 300hp STI.... at the same time, Ford realized that 260hp wasn't enough for the 'Stang, upped it to 300hp, EVO to 286hp, even sissy companies like VW had to get rid of their 180hp 1.8T motor and replace it with a more potent 200hp 2.0FSI, and the Civic Si has been bumped from 160hp to 200hp..... and now we have FWD cars (SS & MS3), that cost less than $25k, with 260hp, LSD's, great brakes, that handle extremely well and are still easy to live with as daily drivers.
Overall, I'm glad Chevy has brought up the SS... it can only help to better the breed.... 20 years ago, 280 ft lb of torque in a FWD car was almost unusable, as getting it to hook up on the street was difficult... now, because the segment has got more competitive, manufacturers are trying harder than ever, equal length half shafts, LSD's, torque management systems with traction/stability control, coming from the factory with somewhat flared fenders so they can fit more rubber under them... horsepower wars are great
Back in the day (early 90's), the closest thing you could find to a "performance oriented" FWD car was the 1st gen DSM... in GS-T fashion (FWD), it came with a whopping 185hp, was ugly as sin, completely unreliable by today's standards (high maintenance), poor build quality, it handled like shit in comparison to the Speed3, and came with unequal length half-shafts, no LSD, and wheelhopped/torque steered uncontrollably.... the breed has got better. Much better. Long live competition, it forces competing manufacturers to raise the bar and build better cars. If the SS somehow manages to take the Speed3's "crown" as king of FWD performance cars, who's to say Mazda won't raise the bar and release a 300hp Speed3, that's even more of a fine tuned track monster? Long live the SS LOL!!

Long live the SS LOL!!I've always kind of liked the looks of the Cobalt's exterior, but let's face it -- it's a two-door. The Speed3 is a five-door with much more practicality and day-to-day usefulness.
That said, since the SPeed3 is likely going to be off the NEW market by the time I can trade my 6 efficiently, the Cobalt SS might be an option....if I can manage to keep from getting a billion tickets in it.

I had a base model for a rental awhile back and HATED it. Slow. Crap interior. Etc.
