So we went to a dealership today. Found a used 2001 Chevy Lumina with 85K miles on it. Price they asked for was $3995, which is a little below the KBB price for it.

With me cosigning for my daughter, they SAID they were giving us 8.9% interest on a 36-month loan. Not bad.

Then they said the payments would be $162 a month! I checked four different loan calculators and they ALL came out to $126.85.

What are these morons trying to pull on us?

Did you count sales tax, delivery, handling/prep/etc fees. Before we bought the Murano, we looked at a used one at another dealership. Looking into the numbers, the dealer was adding nearly $1500 in fees.

Yep, you nailed it! Manager called me a half hour ago and said that he could do $129 a month with $500 down in the next 21 days. The added fees are because of $498 handling fees and $350 in taxes.

SOoooo...we may have a deal. :)

Except I found THIS on their website:

ALL PRICES QUOTED INCLUDE $498.95 Dealer

Hmmmm...think I'll use that when I call back. Muahahahaha!

And there we have it -- buying a car at the end of the month ROCKS. They were willing to budge because the salesguy is really close to getting his bonus. So we got the car for $3995 (KBB = $4200) with either 6 percent, $500 down and $129 a month for 36 months. She can afford the payments, we're cosigners, and the fuckin' Beretta -- GONE BABY. What a POS that turned out to be. We have someone from the beretta club that wants to buy it for parts, so we'll recover what we can.

I never really believed that stuff, but when the manager called me, he said, "Hey, look, it's the end of the month and Geno is really close to his bonus, so we're willing to work with you to find a payment that works for your daughter."

It was REALLY nice to feel empowered by walking out of that dealership and having them call us back. Woo hoo.

Oh, and one of the cars they offered -- a 2005Mazda 6i for $10,900. 44k miles on it. Probably could have knocked a grand or so off the price, but I think the insurance will be lower on the Chevy anyway.

Oh yeah. And she still gets 2 years of free oil changes and a $500 gas card, too.

As long as he doesn't go and buy the Lumina out from under her.....it's Phil Long used at Chapel Hills.

OK, so as of right now, this is going to be Sarah's car come Monday:

We found someone to give us $800 for the Beretta, which is what she initially spent on it. So she's losing the $500 or so she's invested in repairing it, but she's getting the $$ for her down payment and then some.

And if anyone does go to Phil Long Used, don't ask for Geno. He's...uhm...not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

He said that going from 36 months to 48 was an increase of 6 months.

Looks like you got everything sorted out... sometimes it's really tough to figure out what else a dealer is trying to finance into your payments.... I won't lie, I fucking hated working in the car business, I don't ever in my life want to work for another car dealership.... *involuntary shudder*..... it's been 7 months since I quit the car business, and I'm still bitter about it lol.

Are they ALL this crooked? They tried to tell us their original asking price was $6995, but I found an ad in the paper today for the SAME car for $3995. THey mentioned NOTHING about the 6-year 100K limited warranty that the paper mentions, or that she gets the $500 gas card just for test driving.

So my wife is concerned about their integrity, but I suspect ALL of them, especially used sales, are this way.
