OK, so I got this letter in the mail today from Mazda North American Operations saying that Boshart Engineering in Aurora is conducting exhaust emissions testing on Mazdas and that mine was "randomly selected" as being eligible. They SAY they will need the car 1-2 weeks, will pay me $150, will pick up and deliver the car, and will repair any emissions problems they find free of charge. It's only if I WANT to participate, of course, and only if I have between 50K and 100K miles (I have 93K miles), and I'll need to provide maintenance records (which I have).

Ok...WTF, over? I like a free $150, but why does this sound like a cleverly disguised way of correcting potential problems without a recall? Anyone else get this letter?

Sounds kinda strange. $150 bucks per day or week or just 150 Bucks. All the way out in Aurora. Think they woulda chose someone closer? Don't you?

Yeah, it seems hella strange. And it said "A check in the amount of $150 will be handed to you when your vehicle is returned to you." So $150 total.

I dunno...I hate rentals...

No one at EITHER Bob Penkhus service department has heard ANYTHING about this. They recommended calling Mazda.

Opening line of the letter from Boshart Engineering:

"Boshart Engineering, Inc. has been requested by Acura to procure 2004 Model Year vehicles for the purpose of measuring the emissions control systems performance."

There's a snow balls chance in hell that I would ever part with my STI for 1-2 weeks for a whopping $150... maybe if it was $150 a day

To me, it wouldn't even be worth the hassle, not to mention, I don't like the thought of other people driving my car while I'm not around. That's just me though.

I agree the money's not worth the effort there...1 week maybe, but two weeks? f no! also the 150 is to borrow my car, I would need to
be compensated for a rental while it was out.

I'm gonna call them tomorrow, but I think I agree with several folks above -- $150 ain't enough to get me out of my baby for 1-2 weeks.

My guess is that they want to collect some more in-depth detail about how your emissions components are holding up as the miles stack on.

But like others have said, for $150 it's not worth it to me for anymore than a day or 2....... but they'd freak when they saw I was missing the primary cat.

ON this page, it says their procedure takes 10 minutes, and they give you $50:

http://www.boshartengineering.com/IPT/index.html

To thank the selected owners for their participation in this program, we are offering a $50 incentive in the form of a check or gift cards. Participants may mix and match these gift cards from the choices listed on the following submission form for a total of $50.00. The check or gift card(s) will be awarded and handed directly to the participant as soon as the data collection procedure is completed.

The procedure takes approximately ten minutes and can be scheduled at your home, business or other location of your choice. The vehicle will not be driven and the data collection will not alter or harm your vehicle in any way.

Thank you for your time and consideration in this important matter.
