After talking with Brandon, we decided I should post this. I installed my downpipe a little over a month ago, and ever since the install at idol I have been getting white smoke comeing out my exhause. And it comes out bad and it is only when I have been driving and I stop at a stop light. When I am driving it does not smoke. I talked with Josh at burt and I am going to be taking it down to there shop to have them look at it. Hopefully with all my mods everything goes right. What does eveyone think about this. Any ideas on what it could be. Brandon said it could be the turbo seal that he has seen from other people getting the same problemafter taking the cats out. Cause the cats are no longer catching the smoke. Anybody else have an idea let me know cause it sucks when your car is smoking up a storm and you didnt even do anything cool. Thanks guys.

I would say the same as what brandon did. A lot of guys are getting their turbo replaced due to this issue. It might just be a matter of finding a dealer willing to replace your turbo even with your mods.

Yea great that should be easy. If I need the turbo replaced I am going to be very very unhappy with my purchase. The shitty thing is if I didnt do the mod then I would have never of known about the issue. This sucks so bad.

I stand by my initial theory, I bet it's your turbo seal(s). Call Ed Clauss at Burt Mazda, he's a good guy, talk to him about the problem, tell him about the mods, and that several other people with no mods have had the exact same problem. He's a good guy, very helpful, hopefully he can take care of you.

Although if that doesn't work, you could also just take it as an excuse to buy a bigger turbo lol.

it sounds like turbo seals... who knows... i would also recheck everything...

I dont think any mods that I have done would cause white smoke to come out though thats the only thing that leads me to believe it was a factory issue.

From what I understand, when you remove a cat, the back pressure within the exhaust at idle is decreased. The seals in the turbo require a certain amount of back pressure to keep them snug in their place. This reduction in back pressure allows those seals to pull away ever so slightly, just enough to allow small amount of engine oil to come on through....

Every Speed3 or Speed6 I have known that has had a race/test pipe fitted smokes...but to different degrees...sounds like yours is excessive. New turbo or go back with a cat... [img]http://coloradomazdaclub.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif[/img]

Again from what I understand, this is just the way the turbo was designed...call it a factory flaw, a design flaw...???

I followed you from our last meet (Hooters I think it was)...you had smoke. As I said, the amount of smoke varies greatly.
Patrick, your car smoked during gear changes which makes perfect sense. Ease off on the throttle to change gear and you lose that back pressure, infact you end up with almost a negative back pressure.

This is my 5th turbo car... a few of them have been catless.... out of them, the Speed6 was the only one that had any smoke.... if I'm not mistaken, the seal that's going bad is the seal between the turbine & compressor housings, a downpipe should not cause the seal itself to go bad. Typically the color of the smoke will determine what's being burnt, although only 2 things go into the turbo itself, an oil line and a coolant/water line... both of which are plumbed into the center cartridge/bearing section, the oil to lubricate the bearing and the coolant/water to keep it from getting to hot, which is also why on modern turbo car, turbo timers are useless.... on older turbo cars, most turbos were oil cooled only, meaning they got a bit hotter, and if you turned the car off before the turbo had a chance to cool, over time you could cause premature failure, whereas in most new turbo cars, coolant/water is routed through your car even after you shut it off, cooling it and eliminating the need for a turbo timer.

Either way, if one of the seals is bad, coolant/water and/or oil can actually make it's way into the turbine housing, where obviously it can burn due to extreme heat, which is what should be causing the smoke Jake's car is having. I know when my Speed6 was catless, it had a very small bit of smoke, but compared to Jake's car, it was nothing. If he has a bad turbo seal, that doesn't necessarily mean the turbo is going to fail, although I would keep a closer eye on my coolant & oil as it might burn them up faster. Although if Jake's car is experiencing a serious power loss, there's always the possibility of a dying turbo being the culprit.... which is why I've been saying he should get his car on a dyno for months now, to see if it really is down on power.

Hey Jake, did you ever call a Mazda dealer and get your car checked out?
