1. Yes, the blue LEDs are more expensive to produce than the red, thus the difference in price. Same thing with the WHistler Pro-78 I run -- its blue LEDs are more expensive than the XTR-690's LCD screen, so the RD is more, even though they perform the same.
2. Getting tickets while using an RD is a matter of using it wrong. When I got my ticket back in March, the RD was warning me the cop was there. I chose to ignore it because I thought it was the airport radar. So I booked up over a hill and there he was, waiting for me. Had I paid attention to bitchin' Betty, I'd have been OK. You should never speed if in the lead. Never speed over hills or around curves. And always listen to the RD when it says "Ka!"
3. The X50 is a GREAT RD. Matt (Memphis) runs one I believe, and I think Al (Goldrocket) does too. His might be the non-X50 version of the 8500. GOod price. It would go for $250 on Ebay, easily.
4. Andrew let me know how you like the V1 when you get it. I've heard they are very chatty RDs. Lots of false alerts and only so-so filtering of false signals. But they have hands down the best sensitivity in the business and those directional arrows are great for situational awareness.
