the thing about the current use of E85 is that is a compromise. Your trying to use it in an engine designed for peak performance with use of standard gasoline.
Now, if we are to stay use the E85 for what it is, a cool burning VERY high octane equivalent fuel, and we build a motor to just run on E85, then you start to see a great benefit and better fuel economy. Case in point, much higher compression on a smaller displacement engine will yield better fuel economy, that a larger engine running lower compression, and depending on various factoring will make more power. Then there is always the turbo charging possibilities.
I do however feel that they are producing in the least efficient manner possible.

well yes and no.. the E85 uses more fuel per volume in comparison to petroleum. so, you will actually use more to gain more power. on N/A cars there is no purpose to it. you are spending about the same at the pump, but people miss the big picture.. it is to "replace" fossil based fuel.
now, on VW's we can switch to a larger injector and the ECu will actually learn the new usage and adjust. we have several cars in our group running E85 now in daily drivers.
