That car wasn't stock:

They upped the boost by about 4-5psi, pulled timing, added fuel and removed the air box.
Pretty impressive for how little work was done, but still, not stock.

That is very impressive. Hell of a lot faster than my galaxie and a similar weight car.

It's true that a rotary will always be worse on those by design, but I don't think it'll get shut down because of that. Who knows, though...EPA is tightening their standards, and so are many states, Colorado included.
I agree that the general public doesn't know how to take care of a rotary, but it's always been that way, and it's not really their fault. Mazda doesn't really make it a point to say that rotary engines are high maintenance. It's kind of a Catch 22---they could certainly save money on engine replacements by offering training courses / manuals of some sort on how to care for a rotary. But, by doing that, they'd make the car so much harder to get off the lot, especially in today's market.
I personally would LOVE a new RX-7 with a 240WHP N/A rotary. I agree it is risky but I feel it CAN be done. The 370Z would be the car's only real competition, unless Toyota puts the FT86 in production. If they could just make it small and light like a true RX-7 should be, say 2500-2800 lbs dry, it would be fast enough for the general public. IMO the RX-7 has always been more of a true sports car than the competition...and not because of power, although FDs certainly weren't slow for their time. Perhaps Mazdaspeed could offer a turbo kit for those owners who want more power...people are going to be doing it anyway. Only problem with that is that it would require even more R&D to make it reliable.
I'm not asking for an all out beast of a rotary, but Mazda really needs to add some HP to the next RX model. The 8 is an almost perfect car IMO even with its not so impressive HP/TQ.
If it had close to 240whp/200wtq, I would be shocked and would definitly buy one.

Th e8 has been left FAR behind by the competition of late. The 350Z was it's competitor but the new 370Z just tears the new 09 RX-8 apart. It has 100-bhp and 100 ft-lbs of torque more at the crank!! And it weights only about 100lbs more...the 8 is just left in the dust.
Sure it handles great, but Mazda needs to realize 232-bhp (actual crank is closer to 220-bhp in most cars off the showroom floor) and do something about the power. I know making a modern rotary pass emissions, in California no less, is a feat in itself, but come on Mazda!

tbot wrote:I'm jealous!!! that would be such a fun car. The only down side (if you wanna call it that) is that everyone will know its fast just by looking at it vs my car where 90% of the people who look at it have no idea what it is let alone it can smoke them hehe
But wouldn't it be a fun car to make it look like a V6 Mustang sleeper. Loose the badges and change the bumpers and hood.
