Cobb AP

Postby 94R2CSprings » Tue Mar 09, 2010 9:14

Anybody else have issues with the Cobb AP? I've had mine about a month but I had to uninstall it. I kept getting a sudden deceleration with an overboost code. It was like the car was suddenly slamming on the brakes and bucking violently every so often above 5K RPM. My car (MS6) is stock. Anybody got any troubleshooting ideas? Is this an altitude thing? Anybody else had this problem?

Hmm... No personal experience with those myself, but none of that sounds good. You probably should let me take it off your hands before you have anymore headaches. $300 sound about right?

Yea sounds like fuel cut to me too. But you shouldn't be having those issues with an AP. Hmm... Yea, what was the code it was throwing? Does it do it predictably? Can you try logging a run and get it to do it?

Do you have a dashhawk to monitor multiple things? Or just the AP? I'd take a look at fuel pressure and see whats happening when it start bucking like that.

If you wanna sell your AP lemme know tho :D

I have had an AP for a few years now and had zero issues.

What map are you running (custom or Cobb Stage 1).

If it is the Cobb stage 1 map then that is your problem (most likely). I know for the RX8 the stage 1 map that Cobb provides is not very useful and most people who buy the AP and run Cobb's map are very disappointed.

I tried it once and it ran fine but it was definitly not an improvement. Get a custom/tuned map and you will be very happy. I think Chickenwafer could probably help or you can go to mazdamaniac's website and he can tune your MS6 (not sure on price, check his website; mazdamaniac.com).

I have read that Cobb AP stock maps are very hit/miss. IMO, anytime you are running that kind of management, it's best to get it tuned.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm running the 91 Stage 1. The only non-stock item I have is a K&N in the stock air box.

The AP's really nice when it works, a definite improvement over stock. The code I get is "Engine Oveboost." The highest boost I've seen is about 17 but only momentarily. I'll upload the datalogs as soon as I can find a PC (I got a Mac and AP won't talk to it). Usually the problem occurs in 3rd gear around 5.5K RPM. If I stay on the gas pedal, all the sudden the car bucks and it decelerates so quick it's like hitting a wall (think whiplash). If I keep driving aggressively after it initally occurs, it starts happening more frequently and at lower RPM (above 4.5K) and in 2nd gear also. If I put the datalogs up here, will you guys be able to tell what's going on? I'm not so sharp on this stuff. I'd take it to get tuned locally but I'm getting sent to Texas in the summer and I don't want to blow $400 on a tune that may not work in Texas. Will a tune here at altitude work down there around 2,000 ft above sea level? I'm not willing to sell just yet if I can get this resolved.

Except that tuning here costs BIG bucks. But I've head the same -- OTS Cobb maps are crap.

The AP actually reads ENGINE OVERBOOST when it happens?

MAC will tune on an AP for $350. Everyone I see on MSF from other parts of the country talks about $500 for a pro-tune. I think we have it good here.

I wouldn't let it discourage you. ANY engine management should be tuned as generic maps aren't generally ideal, and can sometimes be dangerous. Tuning is generally about that price for all systems too, or in the ballpark of 200-300 per hour.

@ OCD, yep the AP reads "Engine Overboost" but it also gives the code which I can't remember right now - I'll get to a PC sometime this weekend and post it along with the datalog results.

From what I've read, our DISI engines have more variation among them than other cars - that's probably why I can't use the generic map. But man, the times when the AP worked properly, it was sweet . I can't wait to get a custom tune on this thing.
